How the E-shift works. First you put the gearshift in "M" mode, to the left of drive. Then on the dashboard it shows you what gear you are in, is starts in high gear -5. There are buttons on the steering wheel, that says down for downshifting, and the up buttons are behind the steering wheel. There is also a fast ,the accl button you can push, to excute quicker shifts. A few things you can only downshift to 2nd gear not to first gear. You have to shift at redline ,the computer does not do it for you or you will keep bouncing off the rev limiter. The computer will not let you downshift to overrev the engine, a beep will sound. It is a fun tool, iIusually cruise in high gear to save gas, sometimes I e-shift getting onto on ramps on the highway and it is really useful when the speed limit changes from 55 to 35, when going through a small town etc. For example,I'm at high gear going 55 mph, the limit drops to 35 for a mintue while going through town, I downshift twice to 3rd gear and not using the brakes, get down to 35, then as I accerlate I upshift to 4th and then to fifth. I hope all of this explains the e-shift, if I miss something, others please chime in.

Yeah, Maybe if I was a teenager who rides the clutch and doesn't know how to drive it would be worn out....it's not a 1970 Munci 4 speed behind a 500hp 454. It's a little 200 hp Lexus. It should last you way more than 107k if you don't drive like a dip*****.

I've own a BMW in the past, and truthfully i got rid of it because i was afraid of upcomming issues. European cars are known to have issues with electricals, which is something Japanese cars rarely have. One thing about europeans cars is that they have special tools for everything. It makes it impossible to do everything yourself unless you have access to a shop. This was a big concern was i was in the market for a new car (was debating on A4 or IS300). Guess which one i chose.

I think it's easier to change the oil to the IS than the BMW or the Mercedes. Some of the Euro cars have a "special" key to open the oil drain bolt... so then you'll have to get it serviced at the dealer... unless you had the "special" key.

Ultimate reliability will no doubt go to the Lexus IS300 and pretty much any Japanese made car over German. However, while the reliability of a BMW may not be on the same level as the Lexus, or other JDM made car, it is not that bad. It's not like it will constantly leave you stranded, or it will be in the shop for repairs every week or month. Things may or may not break down in the BMW more often, but they are not unreliable. My previous E36 BMW and my current 2002 330i has never broken down on me and left me stranded. My SC400; however, left me stranded once or twice due to a bad fuel pump ECU.
If I were a betting man, I'd put money on the Lexus being more reliable more often than not. However, I have no problem buying the BMW since they are good cars and not nearly as unreliable as people make them out to be.
If you are just looking for ultimate potential reliability just get the IS300.

While all of this is true, the customer service of BMW pales to that of Lexus and the Bimmers are overpriced in my opinion. You get more reliability, better customer service and a better overall deal with a Lexus. UNLESS, performance is the end all beat all, then you have to look for a German car....
...well until the LF-A comes out. And the IS-F isn't all bad either eh?
