So ive sold my GS and my SC and lately ive been looking at the IS for my next car, however i cant decide weather to get a manual or e-shift?? Ive heard the manual is weak, but how weak is it??? my goal is around 500rwhp, would the manual hold this with a good clutch(say from a roll) if i wasnt dumping the clutch at red lights etc...(its just more fun) ive had several auto's and it seems everyone wants to go manual except here in IS land. an e shift is ok but how much power will it hold and for how long?? im sure its not cheap to replace that tranny if it dies. as far as city traffic is concerned thats no big deal my DD is a 10 speed truck with a clutch most people arent strong enough to even push in.

I know that when i owned my supra and my SC the W58 was said to hold 400+rwhp as long as you werent launching it hard and granny shifted.

i'm not sure anyone can do a comparisson ... i think most of us have one or the other and haven't rly played w. the one we dont have..

i've got an e-shift and i quite like it, couple minor mods and i'd say ur set ... but if you've gotta replace anything serious i'm sure it's quite pricy

Well what i really want to know is how much power the stock manual can hold vs. the stock auto.
I keep hearing the manual is weak but id like to find someone with an SRT 2.75 turbo kit(or similar) and see how it drives/holds up.

The stock W55 5 speed in an IS can't hold 500HP. At least not for long. Look in to upgrading to a R154 or a V160.

There are guys putting out 700hp+ out of a V160/V161 and others with R154s that hold 600hp.

I have a built auto that holds 600hp. As long as everything is well built, you should be ok with whatever you end up doing.

I know the v160 and the R154 will hold more power than ill ever throw at them, what i want to know is how much power will the stock w55 hold and how much power with the stock e-shift hold, basicly i want to add more power but i dont want to have to deal with swapping trannys, i know a v160 is indestructable but they are EXPENSIVE, the r154 is cheaper but hard to find.

W55 will hold mid to low 3s if it's built correctly. I'm not sure about the W58.

I had this same question and the answer I got was that I bought the wrong car. Apex is right the stock manual tranny in an IS will hold around 300HP or so depending on the build. If you are serious about investing the money into the car and getting 500+ HP out of it there are several things that you must keep in mind.

1. The tranny is weak in the manual version. The automatic is much stronger. I choose the manual because I love to drive a manual: no other reason. If you want a manual you can swap for the 6spd that was offered in the Supra(part number listed earlier in thread)

2. The drive shaft will also have to be replaced to maintain that much power safely without breaking it.

3. The rearend will also have to be replaced in order to maintain that much power. The rear end that is to be used will either be from a Supra or an LS.

Well, I have an 05 IS 300. I'm putting down 400+ hp on a race built E-shift from TurboEast. According to them, this tranny will hold up to 600 hp. If your gonna stay under 500 hp, then get the auto. All you need is a sprag upgrade, new clutch packs, upgraded valvebody, and a tranny cooler. Peter Ferrell Racing will do that for you for around 1500 bucks. that and a custom stock torque converter, about 500 bucks, and your set. Also, make sure the IS300 you buy comes with an LSD rearend.
Oh, and by the way, if you boost the hp, build the eshift tranny, and all??, Man is that alot of fun!! The eshift is much more responsive. So you can shift thru the corners on demand and really hold a gear when you want to. It's also faster than a manual thru the gears as once an auto spools up, you maintain that spool, where the manuals have to respool with the shifts.

Well if you want my auto trans, it's for sale. Built by Level 10 and will hold 600hp.
