Airbag thefts are actually pretty common. Sometimes they operate in well-established rings. Unscrupulous body shops use them for accident repair so they can make higher profits. This is because of the high cost of OEM air-bag assemblies, which are expensive not only because they are built to exacting DOT standards, but also because some of their sensors and conductor assemblies are plated with pure gold to ward off corrosion.........a Federal Motor Vehicle Standard says they must operate reliablily for at least 10 years from the date of manufacture.

So.....in a nutshell, airbags are stolen for the same reason many other auto parts are.....because some cheap-a - - , dishonest jerk wants them , is not willing to pay for them, and can make a profit off of them.
