Default RPMs

Yeah, from highway driving, i can tell that at60 it's at around 2500 rpms, and at 70, 3000 rpms. The IS300 beats the G30 there, as it loafs even more than the infiniti's 2900 rpms @ 60 mph.

wow, no kidding... 3000 at 70 mph? a bit high. It would've been nicer had it been at say 2500 RPM.

Are you looking for RPM range for the E-Shift or Manual? 3k is a bit high for the average but the gearing is made like that for the 2JZ to stay in it's sweetspot of it's powerband. If you had a very tall 5th gear for the IS, the car would be much slower. The tranny for the IS was geared more towards sport than economy. If I recally correctly, the GS3 also has the same if not similar gear ratio.

At 70 MPH, My 2001 E-shift is 3000 RPM. I agree that this is high number, but I think that is to allow good passing speed acceleration. Unfortunately, that is also the reason for the car's poor fuel economy.

Wow 26? I have yet to touch 24 mpg. The best i've ever gotten on my 04 was 23.5 mpg mostly freeway driving @ 80mph average on cruise on trips to NorCal. Virginia speed limits suck. The fastest interstate speed is 65. That's awfully slow. 65 was the max on the rural interstates here in CA before the Feds adjusted the maximum speeds about a decade ago.

yeah, tell me about it. and in some parts...actually many parts, the speed limit drops to 55mph. and traffic speed has never really been over 80 mph...maybe once in a blue moon.

so speeding is a bit tough even if you tried to blend in with the crowd...there's no crowd to blend in with.

not to mention, VA is one of the last two States in this country that bans Radar Detectors. it probably is the last State.

The main problem here in Virginia (and I know...I've lived here most of my life) is not speed limits or the ban on radar detectors. Like Southern California, it is simply growth and traffic, especially in Northern Virginia and the D.C. suburbs. Like the L.A. basin, the suburban sprawl here and constant bumper-to-bumper traffic is simply enormous. Add to that , stoplights, speed bumps, 4-way stops, etc....literally everywhere, and you get the picture. You simply can't really go anywhere at any real speeds. In fact, by actual traffic measurements, we are No.2 nationwide in total traffic behind the L.A. area.

A few other jurisdictions besides VA also outlaw detectors....D.C. for one. Connecticut used to....not sure now. And GEICO will not insure anyone who uses one....but, of course, that is hard to prove, and this policy has been invalidated in some regions by courts. The big issue now is not radar detectors but cell phones while driving. More and more places are outlawing or restricting the use of them outright or to hands-free ones.

I raised the original question a while ago. I think most of the answers were in regards with the automatic trasnmission. Now, I'm wondering what the RPM is at 60 and at 70 miles per hour with a Manual (5 speed, in 5th gear) transmission. Could someone who owns one of these Manual tranny IS300's please let me know.

I really appreciate it.

now i am not sure at those speed, but at 80mph (on my 5 speed), the rpm is about 3200 to 3400rpm. if it's at 3000rpm, it's about 75mph

Hey thanks Rominl. Could you tell me what it actually is the next time you get it up to those speeds at 5th gear (at 60mph and 70mph)? appreciate it.

So looks like with the Manual transmission the RPM is lower at highway speeds than with automatic, is that right (in fact?).

no problem, i wil pay attention. just need to actually get on freeway to do the speed, i don't wanna do that on local driving, hehe (and i don't get on freeway often)

about lower or higher, i don't know, i thought it's higher, but that's just a wild guess. coz' at 80mph in 5th, my car pulls harder imho
