Anyone have experience with the RR Racing Air/Oil Separator

isn't this basically just a catch can?

Yes, of course. It bolts right up and install takes about 5-10 minutes.
This is a catch can, but some of the simple catch cans (like you see on ebay) do not really effectively separate the oil out, they are just hollow cans. Other cars, like WRX/STi's see a lot of oil vapors making their way into the engine, resulting in detonation and many blown Subaru engines. That is why most WRX/STi owners install air/oil separators. Some of the more effective designs run $300+. BUT, we have thoroughly tested ours on numerous track days and I am quite sure that it is extremely effective at keeping the intake manifold dry.

I have never had this issue. I wonder how many sketchy PCV valves are the root cause of this problem. Don't misunderstand, Rafi is dead on about oil in the intake causing detonation - oil has a very low octane rating - but controlling oil in the intake does not always mean having a catch can is the right thing. I also have little enthusiasm for another thing to maintain when I've never seen any blue smoke out of my engine.

Getting to the PCV on the ISF is a real pain. I personally had mine out when fixing the heat exchanger leak, and it functions perfectly, just like a brand new one I bought to check against. our ISF was purchased with only 30k miles, and it was ingesting oil since day one.
In order to see major smoking you would have to ingest quite a bit of oil all at once. That happens when the oil gets puddled somewhere in the oil line, PCV hose, or intake, and then suddenly gets sucked in. It is also easy to miss smoking because when you are driving, particularly in high G turns, you are not exactly looking into your rear view mirror.
Lastly, I had another interesting experience prior to installing the AOS. On our first track day with the ISF, we had just installed 2 magnaflow metal high flow cats. By the end of the day, we got a CEL for left bank cat efficiency and when I data logged it, it was clear that the left side cat was practically non-existent and the right side was fine. Upon inspection, neither cat fell apart or cracked. I think what happened is that when you are at a track with mostly right hand turns, most of the oil goes to the left cylinder bank and burns there. It is well known that burning oil rapidly degrades cats.... so I think that this is why the left side cat failed while the right was fine.

It takes 10 minutes to install it, and 5 to remove it. Are you guys worried about random inspections? This is actually environmentally friendly as it reduced hydrocarbon emissions from burning oil, they should embrace this!
