Default How to Road Dyno your car with Virtual Dyno/ Power List

What is Virtual Dyno:

Virtual Dyno (VD) is Brad Barnhill’s standalone program for plotting horsepower and torque. It was developed to give enthusiast a way to know their power without having to go to the dyno. VD is mainly based on and tested against a Dynojet Dyno in ‘Uncorrected” mode. It uses .csv files to operate, which most loggers by default already export their file format data as.

Virtual Dyno has been compared to many Dynojet dynos and is very accurate, usually reading within 0-3% of a REAL Dynojet dyno. Here are some comparison tests I have conducted between VD and Real Dynojet 424 Dyno to show VDs accuracy: http://www.boostedtuning.com/index.p...product_id=237
From EvoM

In my opinion VD is a good tool to see an increase or decrease in horse power as you mod your car. It also give you the ability of having real world airflow instead of having a fan blowing on your car.

Road Dyno Requirements:
  • - Computer, tablet or phone
  • - Bluethooth OBD2, Techstream cable or any other logging hardware.
  • -Techstream software or any other logging software. (I used the Torque Pro App for Android with a decent logging rate)
  • -A flat and safe road
  • -A 3rd gear WOT pull from 2000rpm to readline.
  • -Virtual Dyno Software: http://www.virtualdyno.net/

How to use Virtual Dyno:

This video is better than me doing some screenshots on how to use the program. It shows you how to load a log and create a custom profile for your car. DONT bother deleting the extra data from the logs like he does on the video; the logs should be good the way they come from the logger.

You will have to create a custom car since VD doesn't have the Lexus IS-F as default template.
You will do this by going into File, Car Editor, and input the following information for the Lexus IS-F.

Weight: .................3800 lbs for a stock car
Drag Coefficient: .....0.30
Fontal Area: ...........23.6806 ft2
3rd Gear Ratio: .......1.863
Final Gear: .............2.937
Tire Diameter: ........26.0276 in for the stock tires
Notes and Suggestions:
Minimum Logging Required Data
-Time Stamp "Usually set Automatically"
-RPM
-Throttle Position

Here my cars VD

Mods:
Secondary cat deletes
No mufflers
Lightweight wheels
93oct

I hope more members try to log their car and do a road dyno. Hopefully we can compile a list of many cars with different setups.

I will update the list periodically

Thanks

I did some more testing and I end up getting a Techstream cable to see if it would give me a better refresh logging rate than using the Torque Pro app. Sadly Techstream sucks for logging...... I can only log 3 parameters to get a decent log for the Virtual Dyno software . I also had to mess with the time stamp to use the log with VD. But I also found that I can change the logging rate on the Torque Pro to 0.1 sec which is pretty amazing. So far I am very happy with the Torque Pro app and the ebay bluethooth OBD2 connector for data logging. Cheaper than a Techstream

Here is some runs all within minutes of each other; the first 3 are with the Torque Pro and the last 2 with Techstream. All the runs were done in that order. I used the same road and start the pull at the same spot and at same RPM for consistency.

Which cable are you using for Techstream? The XHorse cable works fine for changing LPS and for checking ECUs, but it is dog slow for logging. The Mongoose cable is a lot faster, but costs a whole lot more.

Yeah I got the Xhorse cable the $25 version. I am not going to bother and get the Mongoose cable since the Torque Pro app works so well.

bumping this tread if anyone wants to road dyno their cars to see before and after gains. This method provides real world airflow and load.

The best software for data logging with a decent refresh rate are phone apps compared to the cheap tech stream cable.

There is also a virtual dyno app but I am having issues with it.

^^ I have a $24 from Amazon ELM 327 protocol. I haven't tested it with the F yet. The guys @ Torque Pro recomend buying much more expensive OBD units to get more of the features.
