Default 08 IS-F Water Pump - 47,000 miles - dreaded pink slime

Well, it looks like my 08 has finally fell victim to the supposed water pump issues we have. I've been periodically checking every few thousand miles and damn, there it is...

Just left a message with my service writer. It is my understanding the water pump is covered until 70,000 miles / 6 years. If by chance, they deny the coverage; I was wondering if anyone has had to pay out of pocket for this. If so, what did you end up paying?

I believe lobuxracer said the parts alone were less than $200, and did it himself.

It should be 5 hours of labor which most dealers are 135/hour. Part should be about 2-300 depending on the mark up your dealer does. But they go by the delivery date of your car. So if your first delivery date was in 08 but late 08 you should still be fine. But if it was late 07-beginning 08 then they might help you out by good willing it or charge you. Good luck. Let us know how it goes. Good thing is the updated one won't leak unless they messed up install.

sorry to hear this. I am wondering if the issue is found in all years or if they got the issue resolved in the later model years

$280 for 3 gals of coolant, water pump, and thermostat (optional). You only need two gals, AMHIK. Kits come with necessary gaskets, don't order them.

Coolant: 00272SLLC2
Water Pump Kit: 1610039506
Thermostat Kit: 160310S010

PDFs to guide you through it @ Post #143

08-09s are the only ones I've seen with this problem

relatively cheap fix. to the point i wouldn't even call the sight of pink 'dreaded', ha.

dreaded should be reserved for bad head bolts in a c63 or a $2500 a/c compressor replacement in an s4. but then i suppose its all relative!

This happened on my 08. I caught it a few thousand miles before my warranty was up. Hope it all works out and your car is still under warranty. If not, like everyone else has stated it's not expensive if you can DIY.

Thanks for the information, guys. I took it in this morning and luckily, my delivery date was in late November so it's covered. In and out in 15 minutes with a 2014 ES Hybrid loaner.

Now at 46,000 miles I too just noticed this dreaded pink slime. Luckily this is covered under warranty which runs out for me at the end of this month! Needless to say I'm dropping the car off as soon as I can.

Not trying to be mean but this is why I will NEVER buy another car that is in its first or second year. In fact even my 2010 was riskier than a 2011 but I went for it bec the mileage was so low. I have learned with my last three cars. No more first year models or even second.
At least the fix is covered and cheap if not.

80% of the time I agree with you when it comes to any first revision. The other 20% of the time I feel that the greatest thought and effort goes into a first revision. In this case I'll just say "it's only a water pump." Had mine done a month ago under warranty at 41K miles for an 2008 I purchased CPO May 1st.

I test drove five 2011 & 2012s before settling on my 2008. None of them drove as strongly as the 2008 I purchased. Coincidentally, mine had a 96 Autocheck score against the 85-89 scores I got for the later models (with half the miles).

The fact that my 08 drove stronger, which I'm certain of, can be due to a few things, such as the way the car was broken in. However, I'm inclined to believe the 2008 IS-F is part of the 20%, and I love owning the first one. =)

I had mine done very recently, thank GOD I had an extended warranty, but my warranty paid out $900! So if you can do it yourself for way less, then do it, if not you're going to pay out at the dealer.
