Default '08 ISF 2nd gear slip on cold start

hey guys,

did a quick search and did not find anything related to this. my apologies if this is a known problem and has been discussed.

I noticed on cold start , when I start to accelerate (usually i push down maybe 20-30% on the peddle. not WOT) i noticed when the tranny shifts from 1st to 2nd there is a sudden jerk that feels like a slip in the tranny.

you can hear and see the RPM shoot from like 3k to ~4.5k (during the shift) and back down to less than 3k on the 2nd gear.

This only happens when the engine started from a cold start and accelerating at a moderate pace.
After a minute or two , i start moving from a full stop and it doesn't do it anymore.

Anyone else heard of this issue before? is it something I need to pay attention to?
Other than this everything else runs smoothly. just wondering if this is a common ISF problem.

i have a 2008 model. All stock other than a Borla cat-back.

thx!

My 08 does the same thing. Mine only does it when it sits over night and cold. I think it's from fluid draining out overnight.

On cold start up I normally keep it below 3k rpm till the temps come up. But never had this issue.

Mine does this too, but not always, from cold start in auto mode while accelerating gingerly. I'd say about 20-25% of the time...

Mine has done it since I owned it. I am not worried about it. Only happens when being driven after sitting over night.

Common thing. My 08 does this on cold start too. I usually let it run for 15-20 minutes then it's fine

Mine does it all the time, especially during stop and go traffic on the freeway. It does it even when fully warmed up.

It's starting to really get to me.

Your fluid level is low. It should not do this.

To everyone else experiencing cold flare on the 1 - 2 shift - this is common.

thanks all for the comments. i feel more confident now that it's not something i have to worry about.

anyone know why it happens though? or if there's something we can do to prevent it?
its a small thing but i just hate that jerk motion it causes when it happens.

or does this happen on the models 09+ ? if not, maybe someone from Lexus may know what improvements they've done in the newer models.

I have a 2009 and I had it happen a couple of times to me when i first got the car...then I learned from Club Lexus that I need to not even try to accelerate at all until my oil temp is at 2 bars or more...since learning this and adhereing to it I have not had this happen once...

To stop this from happening just let the car warm up

Hmm, I've taken it to lexus and they've checked it out under warranty and said that there aren't any problems that they've seen. The service adviser said that he went on a ride a long with the tech, and plugged in their laptap and said everything was working fine, and that the solenoids were working properly. They even tried recreating the scenario described by OP. They didn't mention anything about fluids when they finished their test, but I believe the dealership says that they check fluids as part of the multipoint inspection whenever you bring your car in, so I assume that they've checked this.

What specifically (in terms of low fluid levels) do you suggest I look for, or tell the dealer to look for? I might just bring it into a few other dealers and have them check it out. I'm still under warranty so I want to get this **** sorted out before it's too late.
