same thing happened last thursday night... parked at the very end of the parking garage away from other cars. C63 parked on one corner closest to me, and a GTR parked on the other corner.

This question comes up periodically on a number of car forums. The only explanation I have heard is that some people have an OCD-like compulsion to "fill in the gaps" between cars. IOW, when they see a car off by itself with lots of space between it and the other cars, the cannot resist parking in between.

My rules for ding-free parking:
  1. Always park in the right-most space in a row. This means that only one side (the driver's side) of your car is exposed to dings - an immediate 50% reduction in risk. Most vehicles have only a single occupant (i.e. the driver), and that occupant exits his vehicle on the left side; this means that even if a car does park next to you there won't be anybody opening a door on the side next to your car. That's about as safe as it gets when it comes to door dings.
  2. Never take more than one space. This does nothing but attract negative attention to your vehicle, like in the photo below. Instead of preventing damage, some people will go out of their way to eff with you. They might even "key your ****."
  3. Park in a highly-visible, high-traffic area. This is more for theft/burglary prevention as well as your own personal safety than it is for door dings, of course.

I must admit it never surprises me when I park far away to come back and see some beat up rides parked next to me, and boy does it **** me off!
