New IS-F owner, valve knock input (video included)
Hi Guys,
I recently bought a CPO 2008 ISF with 23k miles on it. The car is great and drives like a beast. I do have a question that I was hoping you guys could give me some input on.
When the car warms up, it has what sounds like a valvetrain knock. It is heard best on the drivers side near the firewall (see vid below). The knock is a bit irregular (as oppossed to the regular ticking heard elsewhere in the engine) and I was wondering if there is something going on in the valvetrain that should be looked into. The car is under the 8 year, 160,0000km warranty (canadian car) and I will ask the service guys for their input when Im there.

I searched around and saw this thread (although I couldnt access the embeded videos):
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...on-2011-f.html
So it seems others have issues and one owner had his heads replaced and others are being told not to worry about it.
I also saw that toyota issues a V6/V8 recall that Excluded the ISF for valve component quality issues.
Btw the car drives and pulls very strong, its just the knock that appears once the car warms up and hits operating temp
Cheers

Welcome! Congrats on your new F!
I agree, the ticking sound is very prominent compared to the other engine noises. I would be going out on a limb when I say that it is harmless and nothing to worry about, but I would wait until someone else can chime in with a better diagnosis. Did you mean to say that it only occurs during warm up and it goes away after reaching normal operating temperature?

Thanks for the input guys, makes me feel a bit better to hear this may just be common amongst toyota engines.
To clarify the irregular ticking noise is NOT there when the car is started from cold and it takes until the car warms up (2 oil bars) for the sound to appear. Once the engine is warm and the sound apppears it doesnt go away until the car is shut off, allowed to cool, and restarted from cold.
I'm comming from an Audi S4 (V8 variant) and if you ever stop by an audi forum you seen 100's of posts about startup rattle and timing chain failure leading to engine destruction, so maybe I still have a little residual paranoia left over lol
Cheers

Another Canadian ISF owner!!! =)
My F does have the ticking noise as well, so is two other fellows in Toronto that I know of.
I don't think is something that you should be worrying about.
Let's meet up if you are in Toronto and you can do a quick comparison.
