Default New Brakes Old Rotors?

I'm in need for new front brakes. I ordered and installed Project MU pads on the old rotors. When I measured my rotors they were at 28.9mm and call for replacement at 28mm. Since they are 3mm new I figured I have some life left in these... my question is how often should I check the rotors thickness? 6mos? 12mos? I'm worried that rotors will need to be changed much sooner than the new pads. When the rotors are ready for replacement I'm assuming I'll need to install fresh pads at the same time correct? I was on the fence about changing the rotors right now but seemed like I was wasting some of the current rotors life....

28.9mm indicates slightly less than 50% life remaining. How many miles do you have now? Every 6 months is fine to check wear in general. For example, if you got 30k miles put on those front rotors, you can estimate that you'll get slightly less than 30k more out of them (assuming all factors are equal).

just be sure to get the rotors resurfaced flat again so the pad can make full contact

Unless there is something wrong, I would not resurface them.

This is not reccomended and I hope Lobux chimes in.....you'd Just be wasting rotor life/thickness....
In addition, to the OP's comment about needing new pads when you get new rotors.... That is not accurate. You can use old pads with new rotors and vice versa.....

Another vote for using your rotors over and NOT resurfacing.

Thank you for all the direction. The car is low mileage (just hit 30k miles) The rotors feel fine, no shutter or any problems to speak of. Its also good to know you can change out rotors with existing pads etc.. I was not aware of that. Thanks again everyone

Brake engineers say new pads on used rotors or used pads on new rotors is best. New on new is never the best choice. You did the right thing. Resurfacing is only necessary if the rotor is deeply scored. I wouldn't resurface a rotor. If it really needed resurfacing, I'd just replace it.

I daily drive my car and I'm still running original rotors with 50k+ miles on the car. I've changed the front pads ones and will need to do so again soon. I might have to replace the rotors as well this time around though. I don't understand why people replace their rotors at 30K. When was the last time anyone heard of a story about someone cracking their rotors from daily driving? I think people underestimate the safety factors built into these things.
