It took about 10mins for my car to reach that oil temp today (Socal). I know it has a lot of oil, but seems like a long time even for 9-10qts. When do you guys go WOT? 4th bar?

I let it sit for a minute or two while I go brush/wipe the snow off the car. My commute in the morning usually last about 20-25 minutes and it basically stays at one bar. It does go to 2 bars where I'm 5 minutes away from work. I rarely see 3 bars. When is nice weather time again?

for me 30sec no more than 3k rpm. until normal operating temp.

Default The engine will experience wear and tear either way

Agreed. IMO the engine is going to run and pistons will move and combustion will happen whether you are driving or idling. Might as well get some distance out of that wear and tear instead of letting it just sit. There is no real reason to idle the car. just drive it gently until everything is up to temp.

Long story short. you are going to wear the engine no matter what...might as well wear it while driving and getting a little closer to the destination.

I am a chemE and designed engines for a short period of time. ( although the engines were not automotive in nature the principle and practice of operation is the same).

I keep seriously thinking about this, especially since my driving profile changed to more short distance trips knowing full well the oil does not get to normal operating temperature, especially in the colder months. I'm sure it will save both fuel and wear having the oil closer to operating temperature when I start the car.

Lobux, while I'm seeing quite a few people mention 2 and 3 bars on the oil gauge, what's your opinion on warmup time under normal driving conditions for the Transmission to get up to temp. Coming from a Acura TL which had a new Tranny at 25k, 40k and 900 (thank God under warranty) , I'm always wanting to possibly extend the life. Thanks!

The TCU monitors the gearbox temp and will restrict shifting in the D and S modes to prevent damage while the ATF is cold. The ATF goes through an air/oil cooler, then a water/oil "cooler" when it exits the gearbox for temperature stabilization. So, the gearbox is pretty well protected from foolishness and early demise.
