Reliability vs. Available parts
2011 ISF Toronto CANADA w less than 20 000km
So today I went to my mechanic to get my new F-sport sway bar installed. While there I mentioned to him that i have an aggressive offset rims and i was concerned about my rear driver side shock making noise when i went over certain bumps/potholes.. He checked and told me that the shock absorber was gone (oil all over it) and that i should take it to the dealership for warranty. While I was at the dealership i found out that there was only one shock available in all of north america and it was in California. And they also mentioned that if that one gets sold before they order it they would have to wait 2 weeks from japan.
So I guess my question is... Are there a lot of shock absorber failure to our cars and they're just short of parts OR are they just not making parts??
Another question, I've been driving like this for almost six months.... Is there any part of the car i should check to see if there was any excessive wear and tear??

^^^ he has a 2011, sounds like it was a fluke thing - I'm sure the other shock is just fine - he didn't say say the mileage he has, but it can't be too much - if the other shock is working working fine then i wouldn't touch it - I agree that shocks should be replaced in pairs, but at the time both have seen their fair share of use, not when one is still practically brand new.
Mike how many miles do you have on your car?

[QUOTE=lowrideraz;7301566]^^^^The OP specified 20,000 kilometers, and that is 12,500 miles. IMHO, the pair should be replaced.

I read right through the km amount - I guess it's just personal opinion at the end - shock wear all depends on use, from an engineering standpoint the stock shocks should last through the life of the car (we'll say 120,000miles). Plus the shocks will wear unevenly, maybe Mike kept hitting that same one pothole that was on the driver's side to and from work and it never affected the passenger side, a possibility??? certainly??? who knows?? However Lou, I do see where you are coming from in trying to maintain a "balance" with getting two new shocks. Since he's at 12,000 miles, and if it were my car too, I would just get the one shock warrantied and not pay out of pocket for the other.
