I'm a software/hardware engineer/architect.
Yes I can!!!
I cashed out of equities in June, sold oil short in July and bought back into equities in November and December. Way up. Yes indeed.
There are more strategies than buy and hold. But now is a great, great time to accumulate long, non time-limited positions (ie, shares).
My 401k's are in the toilet, but that's a long term position. I haven't actually lost any money in them, they're just 30% off their highs.
I love all the whining about how capitalism is broken and dead, just because their volatile investments are down. It's an INVESTMENT there is RISK, they go up and they go down, but it is the long term outcome where the payoff is.

"...great, great time to accumulate long, non time-limited positions...", if that advice is as good as the one you did not gave us in June then I agree
My ISF did better in 2008 than my 401K and I thought that was ironic!

I have a business that sells props and wardrobe used by the actors in movies and television shows.
And to answer the other investment question, none of my inventory has gone down in value - and many have actually increased substantially. My collection is my 401K.
