Default DIY: Integrated Radar Detector

Hi,

I integrated my Passport 9500xi using a power cord from “Stealth Cords”, this is a very short cable with a RJ11 port at one end and loose wires at the other; granted for $15 it is outrageously expensive, as they must be for less than $1 in parts, but it does make integrating a radar detector a very simple job.

  • Remove the rear view mirror (there is one torx screw)
  • Unplug the connector
  • Plug in the Stealth Cord in the mirror’s connector (on the wire side) (Black/Ground to Light Blue on the edge and Red/Power to the Orange on the other side)
  • Tape it all together with a some black electric tape
  • Put the mirror back
  • Enjoy

This is a 10-20 min job depending how handy you are with electrical tape !

I don't know how it is in CA, but in FL it gets hot enough to sometimes make the suction cups fall off of my windshield.

If you have enough slack you might want to wrap the wire once around the mirror so that if the radar detector falls off it doesn't damage any of your wiring.

Nice work....

I did something similiar like this to a 2000 GS430..

The only difference is that I powered it up with the sun roof control wiring and I was actually able to mount it at the headliner & windshield joint with the C-clip. No suction cups used.
It was very stealth and not obstructing the windshield.

That's funny, I did the same on my previous car a GS450h:

But with the IS, there is no room up there, and also the Passport 9500xi has GPS capabilities so it need to "see" the sky.

Does that only go one when you turn on the ignition then? Or will it turn on even if you have acc on?

You choice!, the out most (red) wire is always on, while the orange one is on when the ACC are.

Hey TimeToy,
Are those legal in California? Also, is it effective? What about Radar guns the cop fires only when he sees you? Looks to me that the most comon way they get you is with those Radar guns or by following you on the freeway?
Thanks

Radar detectors are legal in all states accept for Virginia and Washington D.C.

The radar guns law enforcement uses will typically come across as a laser on radar detectors and I believe the 9500xi protects against instant-on laser. A lot of times, depending on the radar, one will be traveling down the freeway and you will get a K or KA radar band notice way before you see the officer. If you do not, and you get a loud warning instantly, that means the officer is using Laser, which is (a majority of times) the gun your referring to them holding.

Radar is typically used in most law enforcement vehicles while laser is typically used by traffic enforcement officers or those who like giving tickets I would venture to say they are the most common ways they get you, I hardly see any police officers following anybody with their radars off now a days

If your thinking about getting one, I would say go ahead and do it, I'm pretty sure a majority of people on here would agree that they save your a$$ plenty of times and are well worth it if you have a lead food

I got the 8", it is just enough for my install where the Radar detector is just under the rear view mirror.

Thanx. I meant 8" or 12", although they do have an 18".

hey timetoy,
Is the GPS really working well? Is it really useful too? I think I read that you can store data points of places with door openers for instance and the detector will ignore them when you drive by but would still tell you if there is a police car at that location (with their Radar on obviously)? Did you actually avoided tickets in the past with RDs?
