Royal Purple oil - any pros/cons?
#2
i'm no oil expert, but from the brief times i've spent on BITOG (Bob Is The Oil Guy) site, royal purple is a great oil but not worth the price premium over other synthetics like M1.

Here's what you need to ask yourself. You want to put Royal Purple in the engine so you can have better protection, or extend the times between your oil changes. I always run Mobil 1 on my cars but I change my oil between 2500-3000 miles.
Problem that I've run into with synthetic oils, Because they have a very low viscosity compound, they tend to burn (regardless of what they say in the commercials) so if you let the oil run for 15K miles in a high performance car, You might not have any oil left in the crankcase.
So a short answer to your question,
1- change to royal for better protection
2- change to royal purple so you can run 10K-15K miles between changes.
one thing you can do is send your oil sample to one of the testing labs. they will give you a better idea on how long you should run your oil between changes.

Pioneer, I had given some thought to using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Extended Performance since it's formulated to last 15k miles. My curiosity with Royal Purple is more b/c of its supposed power increases, not b/c I'm going to wait 15k miles. I've always used a full synthetic, and I usually get it changed every 5-7k miles.

I've used royal purple for roughly 7 yrs. 4 yrs with my STI and 3 yrs with my F with no issues. I still change oil at the recommended intervals.
12 quarts can be had on eBay for around $90 which is considerably cheaper than any store and that's where I always get mine. They prob run around $9 a qt at a store. So if you do use it get it from a reputable seller on eBay to offset the normal high cost.

Melbitoast, I usually get the Mobil 1 full synthetic, 6qt box from Bj's wholesale club for $24.99. They run a coupon special every other month. As for the power, the low viscosity of the oil might give a feel for more power but its just less friction inside the engine.
Nate, How many miles do you go between oil changes, and do you see any burnoff?

Been using RP for 10+ yrs with no problems I get my oil changed every 12k miles with a new K&N oil filter and oil topped off at 6k. Been doing that with my last 3 cars and will be doing it to my wifes Mercedes ML 550. Oh and its made like 1 a mile from where I get my oil changed.

I have my friend do it so I will have to ask him about the burnoff but I doubt it's anything significant seeing as he's a wayyyyy better car builder than I will ever be and he hasn't said anything was out of the ordinary yet.
I also use a K&N oil filter. I don't do the 5K mileage thing because I only average around 600-700 miles or so a month so 5K miles for me would seem like forever haha. I have him change it every 4-5 months. Prob a waste of money since my car doesn't get that many miles and use but I do it anyways lol
