There are sooo many variables on how insurance rates are calculated and they vary from insurer to insurer. Hard to compare apples and oranges. Some of the reasons for reductions dont make much sense either. Why do rates go down when you turn 30? Get married? Have a baby? Does someone suddenly become a better driver or less prone to have some idiot plow into you just because these things happen? Mostly I think rates are based on things like theft rates, repair costs/parts prices and then age and driving record. "Sports" category is secondary.

Car insurance is one of the most mis-understood things and given the posts in this thread, it shows that most people have no clue that in most cases there is SIMPLY NO WAY TO COMPARE INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR ANY 2 PEOPLE unless you are clones that work in the same industry, live in the same zip code and have the same background!
My point is there are so many factors:
a) Zip Code where you live
b) Years of driving experience that is somewhat tied to age
c) Job
d) Education
e) Number of policies
f) Number of cars you own
g) Number of homes you own
h) Marital status
List goes on and on and that is why there are discounts for everything. Also keep in mind every insurance company rates cars DIFFERENTLY and values things differently.
This is why 2 people with the same car (Insurance A rates as a sports car, Insurance B rates as a sedan, etc) will get different rates.
P.S. I don't work in the insurance industry but just have lots of dealings with them (multiple policies, not accidents thank god!)

Number of miles you drive to work.

I priced an ISF with my agent (State Farm), and it came out just a little more than my 370Z when I had it; to the tune of maybe 11 more a month. Not bad IMO.
Now, I just need to decide if I want to go ISF or in another direction...

Miles driven to work place a big factor but surprisingly the way my insurance company calculates things they don’t really take this into account. They only want to know how many miles are driven per year and majority of my cars are classified “under 7500 miles pleasure vehicles” so that saves me a ton of money. Just this year in 2012, they implemented a new system that allows you to pay for only the miles you drove which is even better – I love this plan but I think it only works if you have more than 3 cars under your name registered.
There is a reason why a insurance gives big discounts at age 25 (9 years driving experience) assuming you got your license when you were 16. I’m an older guy now (scary thought) and I’m MUCH less likely to crash a car than say a 21 year old who got the car from his parents. One thing that can’t be substituted is experience. Older guys just have more of it and there is no denying that. When I was 21 I thought I was the shiet and did stupid things, now as a father I would NEVER condone those things as I learned my lessons.
Also I have found that people who move here from the east/Midwest are FAR BETTER driver’s in adverse weather because most of us have experience with snow, ice, fog, rain, etc. I have no trouble driving 75-80 in the rain but some of my CA buddies suck and scared to do 65 thinking it’s ice or something ~ LOL
