Default Just blacked out trim-tips and tricks

I just used the 1/2" black out tape from Outmotoring to do my trim.

A couple of tips:

1) I used the matte tape recommended in the forum, but I strongly recommend the gloss black. The matte looks fine, but the gloss would match better. The matte kind of looks like it needs some Armor All...I might redo it some day with the gloss. I'm really not sure why the matte was recommended, it seems like the gloss is intuitively the correct match.

2) One roll of the tape should be more than enough.

3) Everything was really easy. The tape is very flexible and forgiving.

4) One key tip: when you are doing around the edge of the rear window where it has the 90 degree angle, if you start the tape on the bottom edge of the window and then wrap it UP around that bend, it is super easy to get the whole thing in one piece. For some reason, on the first window I started at the top of the window and tried to go down around that bend and had to do a cut. Not sure why the big difference, but it was really easy to get around that bend when coming up on it.

5) That's about it. It looks much better and probably took 30 minutes. I'll post some pics tomorrow because it's too dark to get a good pic tonight.

Now go do it!

Cool,

Thanks for the tip. I bought two rolls of the gloss tape a couple weeks ago and have yet to put it on.

Post up for photos if you get a chance.

This is the link to the one I bought...I chose the glossy tape....

I agree completely(for me anyways) on the gloss version. I started with the matte version but quickly ordered the gloss version and am much happier with the outcome. I have an obsidian F and I think it flows better then the matte did. The matte version felt slightly thinner than the gloss version(if I remember correctly) giving it more of a "plumbers tape" thickness and workability. For a $10 investment, it at least gives you something to do for half an hour.

Not the best pics, but the blackout makes a huge difference!

Looks good. Good job on that curved corner.

Thanks. I was pretty impressed with how good it looks--it's almost factory in appearance and it actually looks better in one sense bc the factory chrome trim is in multiple pieces, so this covers over that. I did order the gloss tape today, however. It's cheap.

Yeah, the corner is surprisingly easy as long as you come up on it with the tape and not down.

The link posted was the "thin glossy" version of the tape but there is also a "thick glossy" version on their site. So just to be clear it's the thin option we need?

I did the "generation 1" glossy tape which is 1/2 inch. You could probably use the thinner tape on the horizontal chrome piece which is a bit thinner, but the 1/2 inch works fine because you just kind of push it under the trim with your fingernail. You will definitely need the 1/2 tape, it's up to you if you get the 3/8 inch tape as well.

So the link 5280ISF posted isn't the one you purchased and the one in the pictures? I only want to buy it once so I'm trying to figure out what I'll need. The thick one is the one needed?

Good point. I ordered the generation 1 kit which is thin. The gen2/3 is the thick. I measured the tape I have and it is 1/2 inch wide which is sufficient.
