Default Screwed up - Pulled apart spiral cable assembly - lesson learned

Welp... tonight I managed to break the spiral cable assembly attached to the steering wheel. Long story short I was forcefully trying to take my steering wheel off and didn't realize the assembly cable was caught on the steering wheel. As a result I ripped off the plastic cover and all the ribbon wire came flying out. On the bright side I learned what a clock spring is, and how to remove/replace one....
Thankfully the mistake isn't too serious as the OEM part is only ~230. I just lose airbag and button functionality until it's replaced.
Any reason to cheap out and go for an aftermarket part rather than OEM?

lol!!! its ok bud...you just paid for your education, that is all.

Just buy the OEM part...it controls the killer airbag in your car along with all other electronics on the wheel.

i've swamped out steering columns(non tilt to tilt) and wheels, but never have done this. i would be pissed at myself though. i'm going with aftermarket wheel on my Lightning and been watching videos on installing NRG hub and quick release, so i've had some insight on little tricks to remove wheel. i would think OEM and non OEM are same quality as they probably are sourced out to same manufacturer.

I always wondered how the wiring worked on a spinning wheel... now I know. Sorry it cost you, but the way it works is a bit cool.

I'll loosen the bolt that attached the steering wheel to the hub than unbolt it completely to prevent over pulling.

You could always use a steering wheel puller like the factory service manual says...
