Default Is downshifting bad for tranny

OK. So I find myself (almost every time) downshifting when I come to a stop to conserve on brakes and also addicted to rev match sound. Is this wear and tear on the tranny? Brake jobs is costly on this bad boy.

Interested to hear more comments on this. I also like to downshift to slow down the car. I am hoping the "F" drivetrain is designed to handle this without harm.

I do it for teh sound, but I'd also like an answer. Found myself wondering this the other day.

To be honest it is best to use both. They teach you when riding motorcycles to do it and you would always do it in a manual car. I would try to use them evenly and not over rev as much.

This is a track built car. It was made to be abused. I think we all including myself forget about that when driving such a nice car we tend to baby then when we rape it we feel its hurting.

I am good friends with a master tech at lexus. He gives me a ton of insight. He makes fun of me for grandmoming my car.

There are tons of guys who track their cars, dd and spray nitrous. Just make sure you kep up with maintenance. I don't see any issue.

I second the car being made to be driven hard. I don't think I've driven it outside of sport mode once since buying the car. It just craves someone with a heavy foot, and takes it well

Yes I notice the rare time that I downshift to first it is not as smooth as any of the other gears. I try not to do first until I'm practically stopped.

I do this all the time as well (when driving "spiritedly" which is almost all the time) haven't had any issues yet, just changed the trans fluid at local dealer, they didn't says any problems with the car.

I downshift to 2nd, and when I come to a complete stop it will automatically downshift to first smoothly. I think this is the only "safe" way to do it.

agreed ^^^^^^ avoid first. If its in manual mode it will downshift by itself while using the break. Just let the car which is smarter then most of us. hahahaha do all the work.

Not sure if using the tranny as a means to slow down is good or bad in this car, but I do know that new brake pads are far cheaper than a new tranny.

DOWNSHIFTING IS NOT BAD FOR THE AUTOMATIC

If your using down shifting as a way to STOP, then you don't really lose any speed/momentum the same way a manual transmission does, the torque converter pushes power back to the wheels even if you downshift in ways that the clutch wont. Plus the transmission wont let you down shift to unsafe gears. The majority of the time it wont let you go more than 2 gears down. If your doing freeway speeds, you wont get lower than 4th gear even if you tried. Ive learned recently if your doing 100+ it wont let you drop below 5th gear

Toyota has a bit of dummy proof features programmed into these cars so that you don't break it even if you tried
