Default MagnaFlow High-Flow Cats Question

So,

I have been running PPE headers and a non-resonated JoeZ exhaust for a few months now. I love the setup, but the wife absolutely hates the smell and is getting tired of riding in it.

I am now looking into getting some high-flow cats welded in to help out the smell issue. I saw people ran Random Technology cats until I believe darbs blew them out at the track so those are a no go for me.

I see mentions of people using Magnaflow cats and haven't seen a bad report of them yet. I would like to know from those that have MagnaFlow cats if you have the Part #. I guess dimensions would also help me narrow down the search to find the correct piece.

I just want to make sure whatever I buy was done on an IS-F before and so there won't be any complications.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Nate

Lou, those are only 2.25" inlet and outlet. You sure those are a good recommendation and are those the ones you used for your old setup?

Also wondering if anyone out there has run Magnaflow cats on the track in mid-summer with good results? I agree that I would never trust Random Tech Cats on this car as there have been at least two cases of failures. Below is a link to one such case.

Id be curious to see the difference in lap times compared to stock. I had high flow cats on my G35 and they held up pretty well but then again its wasnt the monster ISF motor

Yes, PPE installed them in my first system. I inquired about the in/out OD, and they told me it was easier to expand the input/output to fit the 2.5" pipes than to make the 2.5" cats fit.

Found em on Amazon for only $69 each. Thought they would cost more than that.

Random technology cats are the best on the market IMO.
I would look into those. No power loss :-)

but 2 people had these fail on them in the ISF….. Would not recommend

I have PPE Headers and Joe Z exhaust… WITH Magnaflow high flow cats… I don't have the part numbers, but I bought them from PPE (are an option on their site when you buy).

I've run at the track for 2 years without problems with these and they definitely helped with the gas smell.

That's a good point. I didn't even think of asking PPE directly. I'm so used to companies being A holes and not willing to help if your not trying to buy parts directly through them.

Thx 4 the input ERDoc.

Gas smell? If I run PPE headers with straight pipes, I'll smell gas inside the car even with the AC on?

I sometimes smoke and the wife does smoke, so the windows have to be open when I drive. If we cruise with everything rolled up I don't smell it in the cabin at all.

My STI was catless so I knew the smell would be strong, just didn't think the wife would hate it to the point where she doesn't want to ride in it haha

The random tech cats failed as the F was being used at the track if I remember correctly. They shot the metal core though the exhaust and out the pipe on one and the other got stuck in the exhaust system.

I ended up giving in and getting them directly from PPE as a couple of you guys have had no issues and I notice you needed to get the O2s moved because of the cat location. PPE's setup comes with the angled bung kits and instructions so this will make the installers job easier. Can't wait to get them now.

Thanks for all the advice and input to make this decision easier. I will report back if these make the smell reduced enough for the wife to not complain as much haha

Thanks for all the input. I wanted to follow up on this. The P/N PPE uses for the high flow cats is 59905. The O2 bungs were unbranded so they may make them, idk.

After getting them installed, the gas smell has been reduced significantly. Like most cars when you go WOT it's more noticeable, but it's definitely wife friendly smell wise now.

Also during the install, we noticed there were exhaust leaks on both sides where the headers met the cat back. Noise has also been reduced since install, but that would probably be attributed to getting those leaks fixed.
