I also only had 1 key fob when I purchased my car. I bought 2 used 250/350 fobs and both of them would not register to my car. I ended up buying a new F key from Sewell and having it coded at the dealership. Total it was around $150.

Fobs from other IS series should work, but I believe the model year of the Fob is an important consideration. Even though the Fobs may look the same, the electronics are different for different model years. I'm also quite certain that ES, RX and GS Fobs will also work, not sure about about other series.

There should be an FCC ID.

I made sure the FCC ID matched and both did not work for me.

That's odd. It's always worked for me on other cars.

I don't know maybe it was just the dealership trying to hustle me? They did quote me over $400 for a new key fob, shank, and program.

And I thought the fob for my Bimmer was expensive. That doesn't sound right.

From what I researched there are 2 different ways to program keys

There's a separate process for programing a key that's already been programed to another car

This plus a couple of threads here indicate they changed something important so the 2008 & 9 MY keys don't work with later model cars and vice versa. It's a bit of a crap shoot if you buy something not specifically for your F.

Lol, I did not purches it from that dealership. I got it from Sewell online and ended up paying less then half the quoted cost. Needless to say I never went back to that dealership.
