tried using a USB flash drive to play music, but it wouldn't work properly the few times I tried it.

I think the better option is to stream with Bluetooth. You can even control playback using the steering wheel controls, not to mention it is wireless. But if you truly want to use the USB you can use an iPod as others have mentioned.

my phone pairs with BT. I use Google Nav when I'm too lazy to program the car nav, and my phone's music library is there between directions. I have a flash drive filled with music plugged into the USB port. But usually I listen to Sirius (channels 36, 37 and 33)

Just an iPod nano 8GB. iPhone on BT. I'd like to get just a regular flash drive or something so I'd have more capacity, but I'm not sure how well it'd work.

Sometimes I use it to charge my phone but it charges extremely slowly.

I have a 32gb flash drive in the USB port. Mostly stream using BT from my phone. I don't know if its a Windows Phone issue but sometimes the music artist/song doesn't display on the nav screen. Every once in awhile it'll come up but its random.

I stream from my S3 over BT, phone will only charge from the USB port. On an older version of android before AT&T pushed some updates it would play over the usb cable but not now with 4.3.
