The cop already knocked down your speed and the judge knows it (1mph below 20 over), so don't waste your time and get a lawyer... just show up to court in case the cop doesn't show... if he does, just plead guilty and pay the damn thing.
I just recently got a 95 on 55 and hired a lawyer... It didn't get dismissed or reduced. Just be thankful the cop was a nice.

I believe you can plea nolo contendere and the judge will knock off some $ off your ticket and not assess points. If I were you I would ask a mod to move this to the Florida board to get a better geographical assessment of your situation.

The law is different in every state, so people who are chiming in from other states probably aren't going to help you that much. I am licensed to practice in VA and NC, and even though I rarely do traffic tickets anymore, I'll occasionally help out a friend or family member. For the most part, there's not a whole lot an attorney can do to help you "beat" the ticket. The cops that do traffic work are well trained, and rarely make procedural mistakes that a lawyer can exploit. Usually the whole job is to get your client a lighter sentence than he/she otherwise would have gotten without you. In VA, you'd thank your lucky stars you didn't get caught doing 80 (which would have been a criminal misdemeanor) and I'd advise you do do traffic school before court. The best case scenario would be that I'd get it knocked down to a non-moving violation with no points, or that I'd get it knocked down to 9 over with minimal points. I have no idea if that is a realistic outcome in FL though.
Not that I never speed, but 80 in a 45 zone is a bit excessive. 45mph zones are usually heavy with traffic and slower moving cars. Be safe.

It was quite empty on the road. It was 6:30 am. I wasn't just flat out doin 85 the whole time. I think I hit 85 and started to slow down once I realized it. That's probably when I was caught. So I doubt the cop did me a favor. He just didn't know I had hit 85.

wrong time to get a ticket especially in florida. they are expanding court buildings and what not, they need all the money they can get. i work closely with these sysyems in surround states and all i can say is good luck. at least here in NC we have prayer for judgement but even that's a grey area nowadays.

Some of the advice and statements in this thread are ridiculous.
First off, yes a officer can write a citation for a speeding violation without radar and without pacing you.
Second, the officer will be there if you try to fight it. I don't understand why everyone thinks the officer won't show up. They are getting paid overtime to sit there and will probably get a reprimand from their department if they don't show up.
Some of the posters have had intelligent responses and like some have said, pay your court cost and see what kind of plea deal you can get.

$125 for an attorney to go to court with you is ridiculously cheap. I'm not going to quote my rates on this forum, but I won't go to court for anything close to that, unless you're a close friend or family (and then I'll probably do it for free anyway). It's not that defending traffic tickets is hard work, but it is quite time consuming... and time spent in court is time away from other things that could be making you money.
So if you can get an attorney for $125, why don't you just go do that and not even worry about this whole mess?
