And I counter with this:

This is MY engine after 62k miles (100k km) including track use and daily driving with 12k mile (20k km) OCI. Honestly, as ugly as the BMW engines look, until they clog the VANOS valves, the engines work fine. They also make it through warranty in most cases at minimal cost to BMW and Mercedes (which is what they are using as success criteria, not the actual cleanliness of the engine because they're on the hook for maintenance and they're going to keep it as cheap as possible because the majority of cars won't look like ming's pictures.)

The problem is that these vehicles do NOT have an engine oil dip stick to check the oil. The dealers and manufactures have successfully drilled it into peoples heads that "they" know best. Let me tell you this is standard fair for these vehicles when you listen to their extended mileage crap! Driving style/type has a lot to do with this sludge as well. Short trips are horrendous on a vehicles oil, significantly more so than taking your vehicle tracking, at least then the engine gets up to operating temp. FYI this vehicle was maintained as per factory specs/standards and at the required intervals.

No truer words have ever been said. One of the reasons my engine looks so good is because I drive 19 miles each way to work almost daily, and hardly ever drive less than 20 miles when I go somewhere, so the oil gets up to temperature and the water (and acids) boil out of it to keep it in good shape.
