Default New Drive Belt necessary at 60K miles?

I'm going to have the spark plugs and rear diff oil service done at the dealer for my 60K mile service. I got a quote from my dealer of $545+tax. I'm willing to pay that to save myself from a whole Saturday of wrench duty. The dealer also said that the drive belt should be replaced at 60K (for $200 more). Really? Has anyone done this? Is it necessary on the F or just a precaution?

Just look at the owner's manual for recommended maintenance at the specific interval's and tell them you want to stick to it. Its part of their job to up sell maintenance that isn't really needed. The manual calls for inspection at 60K, so replacing may be premature and unnecessary. I believe the worst that could happen if a drive belt were to break during driving would be getting stuck (possible overheating, draining the battery) on the road for a while until its replaced but I've not heard of a car sustaining engine damage just for a broken accessory belt if it did occur. You really have put the miles on a 10 to be a 60K though.

Yep, my daily commute is around 70 miles.

I was just thinking about skipping and going out to more like 100K miles since most of my miles are highway miles. I couldn't imagine the drive belt being in bad condition unless the F is just harder on that than other cars.

get the belts replace at 100k...i wouldn't do the 60k service as the sparks plugs should be good still.
