There's a 76 (aka Conoco Philips) next to my house that I usually go to since its usually 5-10 cents cheaper than the shell, chevron and the other 76 that's right down the street.
Strictly Shell 93 for the F and Shell Diesel and regular for the other vehicles. A while back, I had to do a research paper on gas grades, additives, suppliers etc. Shell came out on top for keeping internals cleaner than others. Some off brands are actually big name brands sold under another name but unless you get some reliable info., you will. It know who has what. The top companies have little to no difference but Shell had the best additives to fight deposits. This was about 6 years ago so don't know what holds true today but I only buy Shell. Ironically, Exxon give me a little better MPG.
gas is gas. it all comes from the same refineries in the area and the only difference is the additives. I don't really care much about additives. When the tank is empty I fill it up. I will avoid the scum bag looking stations though. but thats about it.

You are definitely right on point I have a bud who works for Valero and he says the exact same thing.
