Default Is the Joe Z exhaust street legal?

I'm from Arkansas, and if I'm not mistaken, it's against our state law to drive without your catalytic converters. Doesn't the Joe Z exhaust remove the cats? Is it illegal to drive without them?

Hmmm,, technically, it is indeed illegal, but at the sametime, tell me you drive at or below the speed limit....

I believe this question has been asked before and the only state that really has to worry about passing is Cali due to their strict emissions standards. I haven't heard of or know anyone with a Joe Z that is having trouble passing emissions. Might want to check out the thread below, I know there are a lot of pages but I can't remember specifically where it is this particular question was discussed. Then again I could be going crazy and this question hasn't been touched...if you're worried about it, just ask around town to where the "good" inspection shops are and have it done there...that's what I have to do for my tint anyway

I'm sure Joe will be on here and will be more than happy to answer the question for you as well

i think the joe z/ pts exhaust comes with the disclaimer "for off road use only". that being said, it is singlehandedly the best purchase you could make for the F!

By legal definition in all 50 states it is against the law to remove a properly functioning piece of emissions related equipment. So while your state, county etc. may not require your car to undergo emissions testing, it's still illegal to remove the catalytic converter on a car.

Having said this it would probably pass a tailpipe emissions test, but it would still fail a visual inspection and would be deemed illegal.

Technically, because of the fact that it removes 2 catalytic converters, yes it is "illegal." However, the 2IS (both the ISx50 and IS F) has 4 catalytic converters, so since two are still in place in all likelihood you'll still pass an emissions test if given one.

2 cats removed:

2 cats remain:

Also, any shop removing a working catalytic converter can faces fines up to $50k. Asking someone to do this for you is asking them to take a pretty significant risk should they get caught.

Installation Thread: PTS Exhaust - Joe Z Series for the IS-F w/pics.
Thanks Mike!!

From an emissions law standpoint it is technically illegal in ANY STATE.

That is why the exhaust is sold with the "FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY" disclaimer.

Now from the emissions "sniffer" test standpoint in many states. We are very sure an IS-F with this exhaust installed will pass, since the Primary CATs are still in place. As shown in the above photo.

The secondary CATs help the IS-F and just about every other newer Lexus fall into the ULEVII category.
Which stands for “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II “

If the SMOG tester sees the primary CATs untouched and has no reason to think the car is failing the emissions test, you just might pass the visual inspection as well.

It will all depend on your smog testing technician & how experienced they are..

Best Regards,

Joe Z

Lol. I highly doubt the average mechanic will know the car carries four cats. I don't think it would be a problem. New York carries both a Safety and Emissions. The safety consists of the visual where the emissions deals primarily with the OBD II. It's usually not a big deal as long as the SES light is not active.
