I'm thinking about getting my wife's car tinted and I'm not sure what percentages to go with. This car normally resides in CA, but spends a couple months of the year in Las Vegas, where a lot of solar energy hits the ground. In the past we've gone with a ceramic tint in the 80% VLT range on the front windows, because it's practically invisible (effectively legal in CA), but has a high TSER value to keep the heat down when the car is in Las Vegas. Then we go with something darker towards the back, like a 50% on the rear windows and 35% on the back window. This looks fine on sedans but I'm thinking it will look weird on an IS convertible. I care much more about the solar energy rejection (hence the willingness to pay extra for ceramic tint) than appearance, but I don't want the car to look funny.

Practically speaking, you usually can get away with 50% on the fronts in CA, even if you're pulled over for something else, but cops start to notice at 35%, esp. if you've been pulled over for something that has annoyed them. I'm thinking maybe 50% all around, even though there is a (very) small chance of getting ticketed for the front windows. I don't think I want to go darker on the rear window, because I already find the anti-glare rear view mirror to be dim, and there is only one setting (my other cars have two settings plus off).
