Default Exhaust mods/Muffer Q's and worries from a newb - help

Hi All - First, I'm willing to admit, when it comes to cars, I'm a noob. Okay, here's my questions : I've been really wanting to improve the sound and I've looked at various videos, threads yada yada..but I'm not looking to spend $1,000 for it, My thought was to either get new mufflers or delete them, or something along those lines ($200-$400 budget). Is this possible, and if so do you have any suggestions? The videos I'v e looked at have a complete make over on their performance... and when it comes to deleting the mufflers, is it true that not only will the car lose power, but itt's going to cost alot of money to fix (if i didn't like it, or if the car was leased, etc etc)
