Range = Refuel
Hey guys,
Wondering if anyone had tested this.
I know the IS tank capacity is roughly 17.4 gallons, and we could never fully fill it to the top.
When the Range of the car shows "REFUEL", instead of an actual number. How many miles can you REALLY travel?

I think a lot of factors can play into how many miles you can squeeze out once the refuel light comes on because everyone drives differently so someone may get a couple more miles than the next person. But it is something I've always wondered. If it helps, every time I refuel when the light comes on I buy about 14-15 gallons every time at the pump which means the lights comes on with about 2-3 gallons left.

I noticed when the light comes on, the range is still approximately ~20 miles. When that drops to 0, it reads "REFUEL".
How many miles are "left", when the car estimates the range to "REFUEL"? Anyone tested this?

This actually happened yesterday on my way home. Changed from Range to Refuel about 1.5 miles away from the station. Upon arrival at the station, The car took 16.4 gallons filled to the top. It was a nerve-racking drive, and hopefully I never have to do it again

Even if you do know how much gas is remaining in the tank, not all of that is usable. Depending on the specific roadway (uphill, downhill), the crown of the road, etc., the fuel pump will not be able to pick up all the remaining fuel in the tank. Just because you were able to drive XX miles last time it said REFUEL, it might be less next time due to these variations. Much smarter to refill the tank before that point and it costs you no more $$.

You really shouldn't be driving your car until it gets to that point. Regularly waiting for the "refuel" to come on, you're risking drying out your fuel pump or causing damage to its components and much costlier repairs than just filling up at 1/4 tank like most people do...
