Does aftermarket air intakes for 3IS actually produce any gains?

It actually really depends on the vehicle. Different cars react differently to the same mod. S2000 are one of the cars pretty much maxed out from factory. Intakes don't do much, and even headers are hard to make power.

Now if you look at any V8 LS series car, for example the Corvette, those motors react extremely well to bolt ons.

For your conditions seems like drop in filter and would suit your needs if you really wanted to change something out. You should also look into maybe changing out the intake arm, ridges in the plastic arm doesn't flow as well as a smooth pipe... so basically a F sport intake
