IS 200t Owners: Any Engine Vibrations Felt at Low RPM?
#16
I am not a IS200t owner, but i took it for a test drive and I was very surprised, not just how quiet it is but also how smooth it is. Very well balanced. At low rpm, to me it felt smoother than my old BMW 2.5 I6, at high rpm it was typical 4 cylinder, but also smooth and quiet.

No vibration to speak of on my IS200t. 4,000 miles. As said it could have to do with the way the engine is mounted. I think it's quite possible that an engine mounted longitudinally (long ways/RWD) has more of its vibrations canceled/damped by the mass of the car front to back (long ways) whereas a FWD transverse mounted engine has more of an ability to rock the car side to side. Less stable of a platform. Also on a RWD car you may have the transmission mounts way at the back (spread out further) whereas on a FWD car, the mounting points are more closer together due to the transmission and everything fitting all in one small space. So more chances for vibration to seep through. In that less stable, not as spread out configuration you'd probably have to use firmer engine mounts for stability that makes the whole situation even worse whereas if your mounts are spread out, you can probably use even more softer/more forgiving engine mounts. Similar to suspension tuning, a firmer chassis/platform allows engineers to use softer dampers/suspension tuning and bushings to achieve the same quality of ride

I have 2700 miles on my IS200t. I get the odd vibration when idle, I think it might have happened twice. The only reason I noticed it is that when sat at lights (and not using stop start) I'm hardly aware of the engine idling and this simply might have been something electrical cutting in and demanding a few more revs.
I've come from a straight six 3 litre BMW with the N55 engine and the engine in the IS200t is on a par with the BMW, sightly more refined if i'm honest. So much so I wonder how Lexus have done this with a 4 Cylinder unit.
