IS300 AWD: 2GR-FSE Detuned
I had been wondering which engine they would be using for a while now, would it be the 2GR-FE, or something else? Details and specs have been posted to TIS for the engine and it is the same 2GR-FSE with D-4S, same compression ratio, etc., but with a capped tune.
Someone needs to come up with a reflashing procedure to install the IS350 tune. Or... install an IS350 AWD ECU? Just an idea, haha.

Interesting... I see the new Tacoma gets 278hp from its 3.5L motor. For some reason Toyota felt like they should come up with another variety with only 255hp... The Tacoma motor might even be more fuel efficient because it's on an Atkinson cycle?

Takes regular fuel, I guess?
Have you found the torque curve for the Tacoma's 2GR-FKS? I couldn't find it. Funny they have a high tune version for the 2GR-FKS for the GS350 but they go to the trouble of retuning the 2GR-FSE for the IS300 and keep the 2GR-FSE unchanged for the IS350. Presumably the 2GR-FSE will get replaced with the 2GR-FKS in the IS350 with next year's refresh. Wouldn't it have made more sense to give the IS300 the Tacoma tune on the 2GR-FKS?

The detuned IS300 3.5L takes premium fuel as well, so no savings.
It would be interesting to see dyno results, and see if it is really detuned, or Toyota is just grossly underrepresenting the hp figures in order to justify a price gap from IS350.
I'd ask if the ~0.5s reduction in 0-60mph is worth the few grand premium on the IS350. Personally, I'd say no.

I just don't see the point of the IS300...

What I'm saying is that IS300 will cannibalize IS350 sales, so to have IS350 is redundant, especially it looks like the IS300 motor is stronger than 250hp since it is not much slower to 60 than IS350... so if anything, the pointless trim would be IS350
Now if they made an IS350t, that would be different

That's true... I'm just thinking the true speed demons would be after the x35i BMWs. The majority of IS sales are IS250 AWD, so the "free" upgrade of 50hp from IS250 to IS300 is indeed a great deal. I was just asking that, if previously, the majority were unwilling to spend an extra 3-4K for 100hp, do they project that people will spend that for 50hp?

IS200t RWD/AWD >>> IS x00 RWD/AWD >>> GS 200t RWD/AWD >>> GS x00 RWD/AWD >>> GS-F
Unfortunately, this means bad news for IS-F

The EPA numbers for the IS300 are 19/26/21 (same as IS350 AWD). EPA numbers for the IS250 AWD are (were) 20/27/23. So basically you give up 1 to 2 mpg in exchange for 51 additional horsepower.

On the Lexus Canada website, the fuel economy for the IS 350 AWD and IS 300 AWD (both are only available as AWD in Canada)... Detuned engine but same fuel consumption. What is Lexus thinking??

The 350 is very much a niche market.
Most people could careless about all of the goodies, especially the best performing engine of the bunch.
We sell almost all IS250, which will now be replaced by the 200t.
In sunny states like CA, dont expect to see the IS300 at all unless its a specially ordered vehicle. We barely have AWD models as it is.
