Default Clear bra or Opticoat?

1) Should I get a clear bra or opticoat on the IS?
2) What is the price difference between these two?
3) Which shop in LA can I get opticoat?

4) Would you get IS 300 (V6) for $2000 more than IS 200t (v4)?

opticoat and other nano or polymer coatings work differently than clear bras. clear bras protect the paint from contaminants as well as rock chips and minor scratches. coatings like opticoat, 22ple, cquartz finest, etc., protect from the elements provided that the coatings themselves are maintained, but do not at all protect from rock chips, small debris, scratches, etc.

i have both a coating and paint protection film on my car.

i got opti-coat plus done on my is350 white. Paid $650(Cash) including window & wheels. However I did not do any paint correction (will cost a lot more).

The place I got it done. They are authorized.

Thanks Steveim86! When you say Windows and Wheels, is the tinted glass or the opticoat on the windows and wheels?

Not sure what you are asking. Person applied opti-glass on all exterior windows (sides, rear and front) and opti coat on the rim.

I've never had any experience with Opticoat, so I'll just share what I know with you as a reference for your decision.

1) Should I get a clear bra or opticoat on the IS?
  • I have XPEL Extreme clear bra on my car, and I couldn't be happier with it.
2) What is the price difference between these two?
  • From what I was quoted, full body XPEL Ultimate will cost you $5,000. If you just want the full front hood, it's $1,700.
3) Which shop in LA can I get opticoat?4) Would you get IS 300 (V6) for $2000 more than IS 200t (v4)?
  • If you have $2,000+ to spare, might as well go for the 350 by paying a bit more for extra power. If not, then 200T. I wouldn't consider the 300 for any reason....but that's just my opinion

As already noted, a coating like OptiCoat and a clear bra are very different and have different purposes. OptiCoat will not protect against rock chips.

I have OptiCoat on my cars and I love it. There are lots of great coatings out there and a wealth of information about them in the detailing forum here on Club Lexus. I tend to think of it as a sort of uber-wax, or an additional clear coat. It protects against contaminants and helps the car stay cleaner, longer. After nearly 2 years, my water still beads up and the shine is fantastic, and I have hardly any swirl marks.

$5000 for full body Xpel Ultimate sounds high. In Phoenix, I got my front bumper done at http://smartshieldprotection.com/about-smartshield/ Check their website, they have online pricing. By my rough math from their website, $2160 (in Phoenix) will cover everything except the doors and rear bumper and trunk.

I was able to negotiate Ultimate for the price of Xtreme.

Not sure how the market for XPEL is in Phoeinx, but in OC, there is only 1 shop near me, so they can price it anyway they want...

$2,160 covers everything except doors and rear bumper/trunk --> So they install full front hood, A pillars, rocker panels, and roof? That price point is close to what I would pay in the shop here with those options.

I got my car done at Crystal Autoshield in Long Beach, CA (full hood, front bumper, headlights, side mirrors and front fenders). Ask for Norbert and tell him John with the gray Lexus IS referred you. His price beat all the authorized dealers around Orange County and LA.

For those not in CA, check out your local Xpel authorized installers and call around for pricing.

@new2jdm - thanks for providing the picture.

what is so good about opticoat when a clear bra can protect from rock chips, scratches, and sun damage?
