Navigation Override

Wow, anyone here ever come across this site(!?): http://www.lexusoverride.com/

So there was a way to override the system so we would not be locked out while in motion?

Yeah, it's called nav bypass module. You can use your navi while in motion, you can also play DVDs while the car is in motion. There are 2 companies that make such modules, Prestigious Society and Beatsonic.
