Default Corolla?

Family friend keeps joking that I've decided on a Corolla.

I keep telling him it's not the same platform, but he's relentless.

Latest is he sent me a picture of how the shift gates are identical. :|

His argument is that both were just revamped and share virtually identical dimensions.

There are some shared, visible interior parts... Argh.

Two completely different... You know, it's not even worth trying to explain to people who don't want to be informed on stuff they don't know. Tell them to **** and drive them both first. Then come back and tell me what you think. That's what I did when people saw I got a Lexus instead of a BMW like I was initially interested in. A quick drive around the block shut them up real quick.

On the interior, to show you know what you're talking about and to show him you're credible, throw him a bone and agree that the cruise control stalk is the same (it really is the truth). Then similarities END THERE - mention how an Audi A3 is a VW Golf, an A4 is a Jetta, and a Land Rover Evoque is a Ford Escape just because it has the Ford 2.0L Ecoboost.

True; thanks for the vote of confidence!

Yes, I too was initially interested in going German, but decided on Lexus!

He agrees; he has a ML350 and even jokes that its a Grand Cherokee, but more sarcastically. I also have a LX470 and don't mind it being identical to Land Cruiser, but on the IS, egh.

The fact that the Corolla is front wheel drive with a transversely mounted engine and the ISx50 is rear wheel drive with a longitudinal mounted engine and your friend thinks they are they same clearly shows that your friend really doesn't know about cars. Yeah it has some interior pieces that are the same, but doesn't mean the car is the same. The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a similar transmission shifter and uses a similar ZF 8-speed transmission as the Audi A8. I say send your friend these two pictures and ask him if he thinks the Jeep and Audi are the same vehicle, LOL!

Jeep

Audi

Actually, a Jetta is closer to A3 than A4. A3, Golf, Jetta and a couple of others shares platform. A4 is beyond them.

Lexus IS = Toyota Corolla? Please...
Ignorance like that should not be responded to.

The joke should be on him when it comes to resale value on the IS vs the ML.

When I was at the bmw dealership few months ago the dealer told me that the IS is basically a corolla, he's also the same idiot that told me that the 320i has smaller interior than the 328i.

As others have said, if he honestly thinks the IS is just a rebadged Corolla he doesn't know anything about cars...
