Default IS 500 extreme rear tire wear, inside of tire, both sides the same. Front is ok

Hi All,

If I missed a thread somewhere appologies.

I have a new (4300 miles) IS 500 F=Sport Premium Molten Pearl and the rear inside tires both sides are down to almost nothing and need replacing. I am old and have driven the car mostly in econo mode. The middle and outer edge are as one would expect. Front tires still look new.

The dealer says there is no camber adjustment for the rear oif a 2023 IS 500 and that the rear aligmant is set to spec. I find this hard to believe. Also they say this is just how it is to replace tires every 4500 miles. I dont believe that at all. I have a IS 250 Fsport 2017 and tire wear is about 15000 miles average.

I checked and there seems to be no camber kit for the rear of a IS 500 F-Sport.

Any ideas out there as to why or how to adjust? Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

I find the dealer extremely sus. Did you take the car to an independent shop to have alignment spec looked at? Others have posted their specs on here and the fb group too so you can probably compare to those

When I had my 2016 IS200T F Sport w/ summer sticky tires - brand new from the dealer, i needed new front tires @ 11,000 miles -- for the same reasons you post above. 4,300 miles does seem a bit extreme.

Did they check the alignment? Could be the toe is out.

Even if there were camber adjustments, on a car like this, you wouldn't want to make the camber neutral or more positive. Defeats the whole purpose of the car. So hopefully the toe is OK. could have some excessive toe-in. You could neutralize toe as much as possible (within spec) with the next set of tires. Probably zero. However your car could be less stable at high speeds if you do that. though you'd have better wear.

You need to have an alignment done. Without camber plates you can only adjust toe but that should help reduce wear.

Toe contributes BIG TIME to inner tire wear.

The alignment is probably out of spec. I have 6400 miles on mine and have driven it in a "spirited" manner - let's just say Eco Mode is not really used - and have no signs of abnormal wear in the rear.

Also, do you keep your tires at the required cold pressure? It should be 35 PSI front, 36 PSI rear.

I will say, replacing tires every 4500 is not normal. The dealerships will say anything to get you to buy tires from them, apparently...

I lowered my car when I had like 500 miles on it. I did alignment after spring installation. I am around 6k miles and my rear tires look Ok. No inner wear on the rears.

Just like other members said, get an alignment and probably will be okay after.

Camber doesn't eat tires, toe does.

Was that car ever aligned upon delivery? All my new Lexus we're way off in the alignment department. It's a must to have them check it and adjust it.

You can ask the alignment tech to put less agressive toe in the back, it'll greatly help with inner tire wear.

Did they give you the results of the alignment test?

Yep.
I only had that problem ones and it was extreme out of spec alignment in the rear (severe toe out on both rear wheels).

Thanks again for all the help. They did not have the data sheet. I made them put it back on the rack to re-capture the data.
From the data sheet it looks like they made an adjustment to Toe on the rear. I was told they made no adjustments. The service order also says no adjustments.

It looks like the rear left tire which had the worst inside wear was also at its limit of .02. Then adjusted to .11
Not sure if I am reading this correctly. I am sure y'all know better what’s going on with the numbers

Will be heading to a performance specialist to get this redone. Seriously don’t trust the dealer on this one.

Looks like they adjusted the front and rear toe a good amount. That’s good. Like @Answer said, I’ve had 2 Toyota products with rear toe out of spec from the factory, with my IS being one of those. My steering wheel was actually off center because of it. Having said that, rear inner tire wear to a degree is normal in this car. With the camber arm being fixed at -2 degrees of camber it is going to happen. However, I got 15,000 miles out of my tires and I probably could’ve kept going but I decided against it. 5000 is def not normal.
