Default Manual Transmission grinding in 3rd..

Hi guys i guys a 2006 lexus is250 6 speed that i bought a couple months ago. I have put about 2k miles on it but now im having a problem with the clutch. When im driving it, it grinds when i put it into third.. Just a slight grind.. What could be the problem? Am i looking at a new clutch? It goes into third and pops out but for now i skip third and go to fourth to avoid future damage. How much time do i have with this tranny. I have 162k miles

Mine does this in second, pretty sure the syncros are worn or something of the sort if it pops out like that. Can someone advise?

Clutch wear or worn =

RPM's go up and car doesn't move
Hard to get into gear

Syncros worn =

Grinding into gear, each gear has it's own set of syncro's.
Popping out of gear
Not letting you in gear at all

I'm gonna bet the syncro's are the issue there.. More that likely from someone trying to shift really fast into that gear, it kills the syncros.

It definitely sounds like a synchro issue. Bare minimum it will need a new synchro set for that year. You may end up needing the gear and sleeve as well. Possibly the hub/bearing/keys as well.

It's most likely not your clutch.

Anyone know if the shift forks inside the trans are made of steel or aluminum?

Do you know a rough estimate of how much that should cost me? My clutch doesnt slip or anything, but the bite point is kind of high I noticed is that normal for this car?

Minimum:
04331-53020 - Gasket Kit, Transmission - $94.46
00295-01281 - FIPG, Transmission - $24.59
33038-35010 - 3rd Gear Synchro Set - $99.04
35469-35020 - Output Shaft Crush Sleeve - $15.72

Will likely want to do:
33034-53020 - 3rd Gear - $217.92
90364-45010 - 3rd Gear Bearing - $26.86
33364-53020 - 3rd Gear Sleeve - $134.10

May need/want:
33362-35050 - 3rd Gear Hub - $103.29
33366-35060 - 3rd Gear Hub Key (Qty: 3) - $1.67 ea
90360-05010 - 3rd Gear Hub Key Ball (Qty: 3) - $1.32 ea
33371-53020 - 3rd Gear Hub Key Spring (Qty: 3) - $1.30 ea

Labour:
That will vary, but you're going to need either a Toyota/Lexus dealership with the correct SST and/or a good transmission shop.

Prices are all Lexus USA list pricing, prices may vary. You may need additional bearings, etc., depending on their condition and/or how easily they press off of the shaft(s).

They are aluminum, I believe with some sort of composite contact pads for where it touches the sleeve.

^With the manual Honda transmissions I've rebuilt, worn shifter forks (both aluminum and steel) have caused issues like mentioned here.

Yeah, I've seen a number of work fork issues on R154's as well. It's definitely possible and should be inspected when the transmission is apart for sure.

Any Lexus dealer should be able to order them without issue.

Do you have any idea why it would grind into 3rd now I put the short shifter in? All other gears are beautifully smooth and the shifts are like 1 inch from neutral to said gear. It did have a very slight grind into 3rd before I put the new clutch and short shifter in. About 9 out of 10 shifts to 3rd would be good but then the 10th would ever so slightly grind into 3rd you could barely hear it. But now every time I try to shift to 3rd without revving and going to neutral for a second then shift to 3rd it will grind very loud and very violently. It really sucks because everything else is beautiful feels like a new car. I put a clutch masters sprung clutch and solid mass flywheel in, I had the original dual mass in there with broken springs and it was so jumpy because of how bad the flywheel was rotating.

I've bought my parts from:

https://parts.belllexusnorthscottsdale.com/

I'm sure there are Lexus resources that sponsor this site I'd try them first =)
