Default Brakes........on fire!

08 IS250 AWD.

Like any other simple brake job. I went to autozone, purchased their "premium pads" and whatever rotors they had in stock. This is for the rear.

Removed the old pads, rotors, pushed piston back. Didn't seem seized as it went just fine by hand + the use of a C-clamp.

I put the rotor on the car along with the caliper and it seemed like a tight squeeze to slip in the brake pads. Did some wiggling around and got them in. Looked real snug.

Started the car, pumped the brakes, and drove about 3 miles. As I was driving I could smell something was burning and the car felt really slugish as if something was holding it back. It would stop from a deceleration almost completely without using the brakes.

Pulled over, got out, and the calipers were in flames, rotors were bright red. Thankfully, I had some water in the car.

Has anyone ever witnessed something like this? Or buying autozone parts not fitting properly? Any input?

There's been a few stories here about the same thing happening. Your slide pins are seized. Seems to be a relatively common issue on the 2IS, though it seems to happen more often in northern states,. Moisture gets past the slide pin seals and rusts them from the inside. You can rebuild them, or buy new ones.

Are the rotors that autozone gave you solid or vented rotors?

Guess I had higher temp pads; but the same thing happens to me, except no flames...just a hellofalot of smoke!

Replaced my rear calipers with new OEM ones AND the same pads/rotors. All was well.

I recently had this same issue on the passenger side. Drivers side was replaced way back when under warranty.
