Your thoughts on 5w20 instead of recommended 0w20
So I needed fresh oil and decided to do it myself since the 150$ish quote for syntec (100$ for regular) from the Stealership made me fell of my chair... My car is still under original warranty but I knew I could do it myself and keep the purchase receipts as a proof of maintenance.
I bought Pennzoil full Syntec Platinum and went with 5w20 since they didn't have the 0w20 in stock. Owners manual said it's OK to do it once in a while. Ended up costing 80$ for oil + filter.
Since winter is over and we're now having warmer temperatures, I highly doubt the 5w grade will change anything. I know 2011 ISs switched from 5w20 to 0w20 mainly for fuel efficiency purposes (0w being thinner on cold starts so smoother on the engine), but I still wanted to know your thoughts on it?

It used to be 5w30, but I know by fact that 2011 models switched to 0w20 mainly for fuel efficiency purpose. There was a motor oil TSB from Lexus, you should google it.
I don't think it would extend the oil change intervals, but your MPGs would increase - a little - for sure. My 2011 asks for 8000km (5000 miles) intervals, which I think is the same for yours.

I have an 09, i switched to synth, but just kept it 5w30. Recently switched to 0w30 for winter. I didnt extend oil changes, some people do, but you can certainly switch to synth. 0w20 is prob fine, but synth 0w30 and 5w30 are available so I use them.

Yes, that's just what I am planning to do but with 20 grade. 5w20 or 0w20 (depending on which one is on sale) for summers and 0w20 for winters, even though the first number doesn't really mean anything when you live in a hot area where your oil stays warm...
