Default 2008 IS250 AWD Y-pipe leak

So I recently took my car in to the dealership for a recall. While they were fixing that, they said my y pipe had a leak in it. For a new exhaust and labor I was quoted for $2400. Excuse my lack of knowledge but is the y pipe the actual exhaust and why do they need to replace the whole thing? Can't they just replace the y pipe only or patch it, like a weld of some sort? He told me about aftermarket parts as a cheaper alternative but I'm not too sure what aftermarket parts will go with this model. Is it cheaper to just get a whole new after market exhaust? Also they quoted me for just replacing my front brake pads for $500 with a resurface of my rotors. Again I'm not sure what route I could take so any help would be appreciated. I rather not drop that much money if I do not have too. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

If you take it to a muffler shop that is competent with a welder, they should be able to fix it for a fraction of that price by either welding over the holes (cheapest, but least durable repair), or by cutting out and replacing the corroded section of pipe.

The dealer will just replace the center section of the exhaust that includes the catalytic converters, which is why it is so expensive.

Most of the after market exhausts are cat back, which won't help you for the Y-pipe which is upstream of the cats.

Thank you for your response, so I've been reading around the forums here. And I see that I can get a midpipe custom made or an invidia mid pipe and get it cut, pair it with an after market exhaust say like the tanabe touring. Would that fix my y pipe issue too if I did that?

Default .................

Sounds to me this is notorious with the IS250 AWD?

I heard of many people trying to diagnose a CAT fault code just to find out it was the dreaded Y pipe leak. My daughter had this issue and the muffler shop found 3 holes, they welded them shut but my daughter was not too happy about the repair and things to come in the future as the pipe was not in the best of condition so guess what she did??? She traded her 2008 IS250 awd for an FX35 which I think it is worse than dealing with the damn pipe......

Oh well hope they can fix yours.....

Wondering if this is just an 08 issue???

It's not just the '08 IS250 AWD, it's a common problem with the whole 2IS range, particularly with cars driven where they use salt on the roads.

If your daughter was concerned about the durability of just welding over the holes, she could have had the shop cut out and replace the corroded section of pipe, or even replaced the entire mid-section of the exhaust with either new OEM or an aftermarket mid-pipe.

I can't help but wonder whether fear of having the exhaust leak recur wasn't an excuse to trade for the Infiniti, not the reason for it.

Well they have to delete my cats? I know that is illegal to do. I'm just trying to find a way to upgrade my exhaust and fix this y pipe issue but I don't want to jeopardize emissions or inspections testing.

Well, then just have a shop with a welder fix your exhaust leak as we discussed earlier, and then install a cat back exhaust of your choosing.

Default 2008 IS250 Y-Pipe

I was quoted about $2400 parts and labor to get my Y-pipe replaced as it had rusted out and was starting to make a loud noise. This part was impossible to find...especially the AWD model.

Found one on Ebay model Calnorth 5295 (and 5292 for RWD). $300 shipped. Had it installed for another $280 and now no more noise. Wasn't an easy part to locate but about $1200 less than what the dealer wanted for the part alone!

Thanks for this. Was it a bolt in fit or did they have to mod it?
2009 IS250 AWD is what I'm looking for.
Thanks again.

this part was a bolt in I believe. No modifications were needed but I also had to replace the gaskets and bolts separately. From what I understand, this is the Canadian part.

Glad to help! This experience was a mini nightmare due to part scarcity and dealer cost.
