Default Shifting kills engine

When I put the car into reverse and then back to drive the engine shuts off. The shop is saying I need a new transmission and wants 5K. Can any of you guys help with why this is happening. It drives fine besides that.

Are there other symptoms such as rough idle, low idling? Might want to check hoses for cracks/splits, air leaks on intake, etc. There are many reason why this is happening. Even a dirty throttle body could cause this to happen.

Are you fully stopped before you put it back in drive?

There are no other symptoms I can tell for the reasoning. It drove fine, went into reverse fine but after backing up when I engage back to drive it just shuts off. Doesnt even shake or anything like that.

Yeah car was stopped before shifting. its weird it just shuts off. But it doesnt seem to happen when it goes from park to reversing to driving.

Do you mean stay in neutral for a a little? Technically I go through neutral from reverse to drive right?

Check VSC comes on whenever the check engine light is on. Have you read the codes?

^Start there; pull the codes (can be done free at most auto part stores) and let us know what they are.

Do you have an IS250 or IS350?

Does this problem ONLY happen when cold or does it happen also when at operating temp?
