Default Should we open bleeder valve when...

Should we open the bleeder valve on the calipers (front) when compressing the pistons when doing a brake job? I've read that you can damage certain parts in your caliper if you force fluid back into the system like that. Is ours differnt? My brake fluid is old and probably dirty/nasty but I'm not looking to flush the system today.

I've never done so. Just make sure that if you've added brake fluid to the reservoir, it doesn't overflow when you push the caliper back in.

I loosened the brake fluid cap and let it rest on top of the reservoir to make it easier to push the pistons back in. Don't know if it was necessary but I read that it was a good idea.

I used to do that on my first two vehicles, but haven't since and had no adverse effects from it.

I've changed my brakes twice already and have had no problem pushing the piston back in. Also no problems have come up from doing this. I too open the reservoir cap when pressing the piston back in.

Just pop the cap and compress the piston. You are not going to damage anything. It's a good idea to change your break fluid as it absorbs moisture and any water in the break system can cause internal parts to rust.
