Default Timing Cover Leak, Gurus and Techs Please Chime in

Hey everyone,
So my 06 is 350 is running pretty strong at 107k miles. However, I took it in for the fuel pressor sensor recall yesterday (4/9/15) and they are telling me the timing cover is leaking (again).

Here is a little service history to set the stage:

5/22/14 (98k miles)- C/S A BOLT IS LOSE FOR THE RECALL WE PERFORMED. THE BOLT IS LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE VALVE COVER IN THE REAR. PLEASE RESCUER - VALVE COVER BOLT LOOSE - TIGHTENED VALVE COVER BOLT.

5/22/14 continued - C/S THERE IS A OIL LEAK FROM THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE VALVE COVER. IT IS A METAL HOSE THAT GET BOLTED ON TO THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE VALVE COVER. PLEASE CHECK AND SEE IF IT WAS NOT SECURED BY THE RECALL. - INSPECTED OIL COOLER PIPE ON RIGHT SIDE VALVE COVER BOLTS ARE TIGHT - NO OIL LEAK FOUND. ONLY RESIDUAL OIL FOUND FROM PREVIOUS TIMING COVER & OIL PAN RESEAL. CLEANED EXCESS OIL

10/25/13 (95k miles) - Cam Gear Recall Performed

11/29/12 (86k miles) -"Timing Cover Resealed"

7/10/12 (83k miles) - RESEALED SECONDARY OIL PAN AND PRESSURE FEED LINE TO BANK ONE - OIL LEAKING FROM SECONDARY OIL PAN AND PRESSURE FEED LINE TO BANK ONE

9/28/10 - valve spring recall performed

I have also had the tranny replaced at 60k and two new steering racks ( one for the recall and one out of pocket)

As you can see, I brought the car in last may stating that the timing cover was leaking and now it is leaking from the identical place that they said, at that time, it was not leaking . Did they miss the leak when i brought it to them originally?

Is my previous service history a causal factor of the current leak. Does the cam gear recall work have anything to do with the timing cover?Considering the timing cover has already been sealed, could they have done a "poor" job? Does the valve spring recall work, taking the engine out etc, increase the chances of such leaks occurring.

Thanks for the input everyone. I am basically trying to determine if previous work, or lack of, is related (possibly a direct cause) for the current and repeated oil leaks.

Why did you have the tranny replaced at 60k?

VSC light kept coming on and off, and they couldn't figure it out. It took until the 4th visit for it to be replaced.
They deemed it an "internal transmission failure" after codes P0761\P2714. Was 100% covered by Lexus

^Well, that was nice of them to cover 100% of the trans!

However, about the leaking cover, I'd be all over Lexus not correctly doing the re-sealing job because it should not be coming back this soon...if at all ever! I'd be pretty adamant about Lexus covering 100% of this cost. Did you come 100% out-of-pocket on the previous re-sealing?

If i remember correctly, the resealing was covered as a result of the extended warranty from the Valve spring recall. I don't think I paid a penny. I'm not too knowledgeable of the actual work that goes into these repairs so I'm just trying to build up some ammo and draw connections at this point.

^Well, if Lexus had performed the repair correctly regardless of whom paid for it, it should have been done right and should not have be leaking ever again. So in my mind I'd be firm, but not an A-hole, about Lexus covering it as a customer-satisfaction issue caused by their own negligence.

Good luck!

Oh man, i hope they will do the right thing and fix it. It shouldn't have leak again so soon. I was notified about the leak on my 2006 at around 110k miles but elected not to have it fixed because it was ao expensive. I am at 122k now and the leak hasn't gotten any more than before.

Call lexus complaint hotline and they will usually cover something like this is you ***** enough. I'm a Toyota tech and we bend over backwards for people quite often when they complain to Toyota corporate. However this could just be a leaking valve cover or if they didn't put a new metal crush washer on the metal oil line mentioned in your previous history or didn't torque it properly this can also give the illusion of a leaking timing cover. But like I said call the corporate hotline and complain. Either lexus themselves or the dealership will pay for all or a good portion of it. We've given away $1200 ECUs to people for free because they lost all their keys and the only way to program a new master key without a previous programmed master on some cars is to replace the Ecu. So not really even our fault but a lot of time you can get it covered once

I appreciate the feedback. I'm gonna give the dealership a shot at it. Im just baffled on the fact that it needs to be changed again after 21k miles and i told them it was leaking again at 12k miles

It happens. You gotta be pretty meticulous with the FIPG sealant on the timing covers otherwise they are bound to leak again. Ita not super common but I am very careful with them and I've still had one come back on me

Is the passenger side bank one? I think I might have a leak from the bolt connecting the pressure feed line... is this going into the block right in front of the exhaust manifold?
