I have an 06 and I love it. I think the stereotype usually applies to major redesigns like new engine or drivetrain. The GR engines were used in a good amount of cars before the IS so it wasn't anything that could not be foreseen. When Lexus revamps the IS with their new 2.0t engine, that MAY be a time where you would want to stay clear of first years but 2.0t technology has really come a long way so I don't foresee any major issues

If you got a deal on an 06, I wouldnt NOT check it out

the 06 was my first lexus and while i didn't have many problems to begin with, i'd say most of the problems everyone encountered later i've had. i wouldn't buy the first year model (or the second for that matter) which is why i don't look to purchase lexus is cars today.

don't forget the airbag light problem. and now, the vsc issue or should i say a bad cat. if these are no-brainer fixes that wouldn't be a problem but they are a hassle and you're never quite sure if they are covered or how it will be handled. just waiting for a huge out of pocket expense.....or a big thumbs down from lexus. also there have been a couple of other big issues i can't quite recall but i remember them because i know how i feel about lexus now.

i just bought an 06' IS350 with 53k for $16900.

i love it so far. i was in your exact situation a few weeks ago however, i ended up getting the 2006 because i couldnt beat the price for all the features i got. I mean, for $16900, there were 2007 IS250's with 80k+ miles....(+ the IS250's has the carbon build up issue)

here are some recalls to make sure you get done....

floor mat recall
windshield wiper screw recall
trunk release recall
valve recall
fuel sensor recall
and the biggest one...
the VVT cam gear recall (which if you dont get done, the car has horrible rattling)

other than that its been riding fine for the past few weeks. my TPMS sensor comes on every week, i guess my left rear tire has a problem but other than that, its my baby

so i assume you sold your car then? big issues, what do you mean? what would you think of an 08 is350 with 120,000km vs an 06 is350 with 70,000km.

bought my 06 IS350 when it had 80000 km. Now it is sitting at 150000 KM and all I've had done was regular maintenance and recalls. The only out of pocket expense beside regular maintenance was EVAC drain which cost me $100. This car was the only car I kept for more than 2 years (its now 3 years since i bought it)

I had an 06' IS250 that has a slight carbon build up issue (which the 350 doesn't have). Other than that it was the small TSB's or recall. They've proven themselves to be good. Some of the newer ones have different features that the 06' didn't have though but I didn't care.

LOL, I am experiencing 2 issues on your list now: nav failure, pealing window trim. Man, you seem to notice all kinds of problems haha. I will be looking for dent in roof to see if it is there.

How do you fix the pealing window trim?

*Weather-damaged windshield trim
*Dent in roof (yes, actually a common issue)
*Pealing window trim (the black portion on the chrome trim)
*Alternator failure
...and then all of the recalls.

The WP and drain blockage were Lexus repairs with ZERO out-of-pocket; and same goes for the numerous recalls. Those repairs that I had to fix myself (DIY KING!), only cost me <$1k. So it is MUCH less than an aftermarket extended warranty or the repair bill for a BMW.

Does the VVT recall include changing the cam gear?

I have a 06 IS350 w/ 74k miles... did majority of all the TSBs for the car..Had some issues, replaced alternator and had a oil leak that cost a pretty penny since it's been out of warranty for awhile.
