Default IS250 Engine Rattle - Only when warm

I had the TSB done by Lexus when the car was still under warranty. Almost 5 years ago. The Noise completely disappeared. Didnt hear it for 5 years.

But 5 years and 95k miles later I occasionally now I get this rattle again. But it's predictable, it seems to only happen after driving and i turn off the car and let the car sit for 30-60minutes and then go to start it, then this is the time it makes the noise.

If its left to sit for more than an hour then its fine or less than 30minutes is usually fine too. It doesnt sound the same as the original rattle i had when the TSB was done. The original one used to sound like its coming from the top of the engine bay and would most come on cold starts. This sounds more like its coming from the bottom of the engine bay and only when engine is warm and it's been sitting for a little while.

Any ideas what could be and what I can do? Thanks

Are you talking about the "cam rattle" where the VVT cam gear was replaced?

So just to confirm, that noise ONLY happens upon starting the car for a second...correct?

Yes correct, only for a few seconds. But the recall was done about 5 years ago and was fine since. Now only happens when car is turned off and if i go to start it within about 30-60mins. After or before this time period is fine. Not as loud as before, and it basically turns over and once it has started makes this noise for a second or two.

Do you use full syn or conventional oil? I found my cam rattle only happened after a HOT afternoon in the summer sun when I was nearing the end of my oil change interval.

How many miles are on the car? You may have a lifter bleeding down causing the noise...

Is it the same CAM rattle (similar to IS350) or is it the TSIB engine rattle at cold start up for the 250. I think they are two different things

So it seems to now also be happening randomly even on cold starts after sitting overnight.

Changing oil doesn't seem to make a difference. After fresh oil change a few days later I still heard the noise. Here's a video I have found on youtube, and seems identical to the noise I am getting, except my noise can sometimes be longer:

Seems to be random and makes me think maybe depends on where something stops when turning the engine off, and if stopped at certain position it makes the noise?

Car is now way out of warranty period and wondering what I should do. Does anyone know what exactly this noise is and is it damaging anything in the engine?

I start to get this noise a week ago. Exactly the same as you described in your original post. It only happens when the car sit for 30 - 60 minutes. It doesn't rattle on cold start. Also, I feel the engine is a little bit "tired". Don't know if its just a coincident.

My car is a 2012 250 F-sport. Only 29000 KM. This is the very last model year of the 2IS. I'm quite disappointed with the Lexus quality to be honest.

Here is my recording

UpSideDown, yeap thats exactly the sound. Mine does it pretty much all the time when car sits for about 20-60mins. But recently has started to do it randomly in the morning first starts.

The car will be in for 30000KM service in 2 weeks. The mechanics will take care of the engine rattle at same time, I hope. They mentioned that it could be the cam gears, but wondered why it happens on a 2012 model. The cam gear recall is mainly for 2006-2008 models.

Since the same engine carries over to 2013 3IS, I wondering if they will eventually have this problem too?

Just to clarify, there is no recall for cam gears on is250, only the is350 has the cam gear recall...

There is a TSIB for cam gear rattle on is250 however.

My fault, I mean the TSIB. It was for 06-08 250. Strange that this problem still exist on 2012 IS250.

Some of these cars may be experiencing lash adjuster/lifters that are bleeding down.

As I had posted before, while the cam gear rattle is a possibility, if the lifters are bleeding off oil pressure, this can create the same issue until the lifters build up oil pressure again...

Like Gville350 said I also get mine right before the oil change. I had it and changed my oil around 1 week ago and haven't heard it since.
