Default Brittle Dashboard

Hey all,
I finally got around to installing my Flyaudio(ish) Nav unit that I got from alibaba and I will write a full review, I promise. They have to send me a software update to fix a few issues that normal flyaudio units had so I want to get that as early as possible. (Temparature, Radio, nav software)

Anyway I Park my car outside so my dash has a few sunspots and dryness up top but the moment I put a flathead in between the vents to pull it out, it began to crumble! my dash looks like **** now. Has this happened to anyone. Up top there seems to be a lot of soft spots and then the lower you get, it gets hard and I had no issues. The previous owner opened up the dash to put in an XM sat unit so there was some pieces that were broken that was hard for me to get around.

I started looking for fillers and fixes but anyone want to recommend a fix?

The fix is a new dashboard. I too have some edges around the NAV unit missing material, due to minor contact with the NAV unit during the uninstall. It really didn't take much, and right after it happened I nearly cried.

Yeah I don't want to pay a grand for a new dashboard. I literally cried after it happend. But I am going to look in to filling some of the holes down and then sanding it. Maybe even write an DIY on it

what year is your IS? i'm wondering if after a certain they started changing the dash materials. I used plastic trim tools to remove my radio many times (was experimenting on electrical stuff) and no broken dash (09 IS)

I hate the dash on the IS.

I probably removed the navi 20x to install and remove different things. The dash right above the vent starts to take a toll from me removing it so many times. There is like a minor gap that bugs the crap out of me since it's right in front of my face. I've been trying to figure out how to repair it.

This happened to me before in a 07 Camry - the dash was so soft you could dig your fingernails into it lightly and it would mark.

I notice a wrecker selling the dash + speedo for $150 near me from a 2011 model, should I buy it just in case for future use lol?

06 so Its got some years on your car. Plus my car stays outside so it is full of sun spots on top. The top is incredibly soft but the moment you go down the dash say near the lower center console area or glove box area, its gets hard. Im thinking about cutting out the rough edges, filling the hole marks and sand it down this weekend. see if I can revive it a bit.

Yeah I was looking at a few fillers using a foam and then dremel it down or using a filler and sanding it down. I havent decided yet on what I wanted to do.

I was extremely careful. Problem was the old owner i guess broke the tabs prior on the vents that i had to almost pry the vents out. behind the stock radio was a poorly installed XM unit. I used some tape to hold down the corners so I can easily slip in and out the vents if I needed to .
