Default First Problem @76k miles on my 2010 IS 250 AWD (CV Boots/ Axles/ Drive Shafts)

Well....I never thought I would have to say this at a measly 76k miles, but my IS has finally given me a problem.

Bought new in July 2010 because I figured I could get at least 100k out of her without putting ANY money into her besides the regularly scheduled Lexus maintenance. I go through Daily Drivers pretty quickly driving all over to client's homes all over the state.

Anyway, the dealer told me that the rear axles/drive shafts are leaking grease AND the reservoir cap on my rear dif was loose...and had a little spillage around the area.

I am not new to car maintenance, having owned my Ferrari over 4 years, but I never expected this kind of thing on a Lexus.

Wanna know how gently I drive my Daily Drivers??? I still have 3mm left on my ORIGINAL front brakes....yes!!....76,000 miles and I have not had to change my front brakes just yet....(Changing the brakes and the rotors at my next oil change, though, as I just recently started to get a little shuttering from the newly-warped rotors.

So, anyway, the brakes+rotors are not a big deal--regular maintenance item after 76k miles....

No other issues with the car....and I always tell myself I will keep my DDs forever...lol....last DD was a brand new Civic with 94k on it when I sold her so who knows....right?

Dealer quoted me $2,600 ($1,900 in friggin' parts alone!) to change the axles.....lmao....that's ridiculous, I told him!!! (Yes, I get all my oil changes done at the dealer still).

I found the parts for $1,300 at Sewell (I am also buying my brake pads+rotors through them this week)...and I might just have Lexus do the labor--6hrs @ $130 per...

I will probably contact an independent Lexus mechanic tomorrow just to see what they would charge me to change all this stuff out.

My online research tells me that these axles cannot be repacked with grease or have any of the individual parts replaced as the axles are one big unit......all true???

Also...what is the deal with these Brake Fit Kit and Brake Front Shim Kit when replacing the front brake pads + rotors? Anyone know if I need these? The written Lexus dealer quote didn't include these items but I see them listed on Sewell's website.

Oh, and by the way.....my DDs are all stock on the outside....except for OEM G-Star 18" wheels I put on when I took delivery.

So....76k miles in 34 months....and I have to fix something for the first time....Boo!!!!

I think that if you go to the same dealer you were at they will probably match Sewells price that way you will save on shipping.

Well, I got some great news.

I went in for my oil change at 76k and got a substitute SA as mine was on vacation. I asked him to review my service records and there was no mention of the leaking axles at 67k miles but there WAS at 72k miles.

The powertrain warranty expires at 70k, and I have owned my car for 33 months since new.

Since Lexus is known for their excellent customer service....and only 2 months had passed in between those 67k & 72k mile oil changes, I asked if he could look into having Lexus Goodwill me the repairs. I have been Goodwilled warranty claims after the new car warranties have expired through bot Honda and BMW

After 2 days he called to tell me Lexus was going to warrant the PARTS (Saving me $1,800 retail (or $1400 from Sewell), but I would have to pay for the labor.

So...pretty stoked...and a believer in Lexus NA.

I have 79K on my 07 250 & was told on Friday that both rear boots are leaking grease. Being covered by my Lexus extended warranty.

I paid $1450 for the warranty and it have paid for $3500 in repairs so far - one more year to go under warranty.

I am getting rid of this car right before the warranty expires. Way too many repairs/recalls/TSIBs.

It's a good thing that Lexus was willing to "goodwill" warranty your car! They also rebuilt my engine for free under their "goodwill" warranty. I was 400 miles out of warranty but sadly my engine is knocking now so it'll have to be torn apart again. No idea if Lexus will cover me this time. No luck with my IS, more than 10 warranty repairs and possibly two engine rebuilds in the three years I owned it.
