I know mixing between brands and mixing between synthetic and dino could give me problems, but would there be any problem between mixing 5w20 Royal Purple with 5w30 Royal purple.

I have a 2006 is350 and have 3 quarts of 5w30 Royal purple oil. The autostore near me are out of 5w30 so I am considering buying 3 quarts of 5w20 Royal purple and mixing them together. I know our car calls for 5w30, but the TSB release changed it to 5w20; therefore getting a mixture inbetween shouldn't do any harm right?

I just want to hear feedback to make sure I am not doing a bone headed move.

From the factory, Lexus calls for 5W30 for all years of IS350 and 2006-2010 IS250, 0W20 for 2011-13 IS250.

I would not recommend mixing weights. While there is a minimal viscosity difference between 5W20 and 5W30, there is a difference. I also have an '06 IS350 and have used 5W30 since I bought the car. When i first bought it (used) I nearly lost my mind when I saw that it took 5W20 and saw 5W30 written on the oil change sticker from the dealer. I later found out about the TSB. If you mix them, you are running somewhere in the middle. I am OCD about a lot of things, and motor oil is a super sensitive subject as it plays such a significant role in your engine's performance and longevity. Go to another store and get 5W30 bro, for peace of mind if nothing else.

i dont think it would matter for royal purple because thier oil is really thin compared to the regular syn oil

hmm I should make a poll for this, but which one would be better since the manufacturer recommends 5w20 for us now:

to go with full 5w30 or mix together the two to make 5w25

the guy lives in socal, for one oil change 3-5k miles with those mixed oils, he likely wont have problems . although he is a cheap bastard i would not do that to my own cars.

yeah, he'd be fine running what would basically be 5W25

And for the record, there's nothing wrong with mixing dino and synthetic either...the two are entirely compatible.... in fact they even sell oil already mixed this way- it's called a synthetic blend.

You do lose much of the benefit from running a full synthetic if you mix, but it's not like it'll cause a nuclear reaction or anything.
